Depression screening reveals: 98% of Americans depressed

Other 2% Lack Newspaper Subscription, Pulse

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | Screening for depression, a practice widely supported by the medical community, has yielded alarming results so far, doctors say, with nearly 98% of those screened exhibiting signs of depression.

The alarming results, which would indicate that America is the most bummed-out nation in the world, came after the American Medical Association slightly revised the two questions doctors ask when screening patients for depression.

The two revised questions are: "Have you read a newspaper in the last eight months?" and "Do you have a pulse?"

Dr. Bernard Colvin of the AMA brushed aside criticism from some in the psychiatric community who have suggested that the 98% figure may be too low.

"We've got some psychiatrists out there who think we're not asking the key question," Dr. Colvin said. "Which is, 'Have you seen Dick Cheney on TV lately?'" Dr. Colvin said.

But Dr. Colvin warns that asking the Cheney question "usually depresses people who are perfectly happy before you ask it."

Given the new data, which is in itself depressing, Dr. Colvin has only one remedy for depressed Americans: a complete and utter ignorance of the world around you.

"Given the state of the world, it's best to stay isolated from any and all disturbing information," Dr. Colvin says, "the way President Bush does."
