An open letter to the right...and left

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | Dear Talkers and Those Who Follow Lockstep,

First of all you should know, I do not agree with the rationale for getting us into this war. I wish we could get rid of every despot in this world but we have long ago agreed not to become the world's police.

There, I'm glad I got that off my chest. If it makes me some sort of Leftist, I don't buy it, but so be it.

But I'm writing for a different reason. I want to admit some things that you may not be aware of as I am one of those who are against going to war...

I admire the courage and commitment of our men and women fighting in Iraq.

And you should know most of all, I despise Saddam Hussein.

I despise everything he and his sick, sadistic henchmen do and say. I wish him dead, dead, dead. The world will be a better place without him.

I despise his disregard for human rights and decency.

I despise his Goebbels network of misinformation. I despise his scapegoating of the Kurds and Jews and Israel and America.

The need for him to bend the facts to systematically paint any opposition with broad strokes of hate and blame are sure signs of evil and fear. Fear that the truth would hurt your position. It doesn't matter whether the culprit is named Saddam or Hitler or Goebbels. The we are better than them crusades are self-serving and recall memories of doors painted with swastikas and branding arm bands.

Sometimes, if I replace Liberal or Democrat, Conservative or Republican, with the word "Jew" I am reminded of what "Never Again" referred to.

The those who rationalize their bending of the truth by saying they are only "infotainers" should look up the word "propagandist." Calling yourself an "infotainer"doesn't justify vindictively slamming anyone and anything with...Slander. That is unless the affix "tainer" means "liar."

If you haven't crumbled up this letter as yet, here's another confession.

I think those of the minimally heard talking heads of the Left who perpetrate hate speech at the Right to be just as wrong as those who condemn the Left..

I am not saying that we can't take jabs, or even have fun with the opposition. If so, I'd be out of a job. There are ripe targets aplenty. Take France....please. Heck, I think they should cancel the WB's new "Family Affair" show because of the incorrigible Mr. French

What I am saying is that when you make the people who oppose you on a particular issue into the enemy it gets us in trouble. Condemning with hate speech those you disagree with makes you no different than the regimes you claim to despise. More important, condemning, with hate speech, other Americans does not make you more American. If anything, it makes you less.

Sincerely,
Steve "Don't Me Because I'm A Liberal" Young
