Radio talk takes a surprise hit

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | At least Bill Clinton gave them some warning. There's was a pretty good chance he wouldn't run for a third term. With his running mate running for top job in 2000, using the shop worn Clinton is the devil material was still in play.

Two years worth of those hysterical Algor references were being readied for a rerun. The radio kings who spend almost as much time pitching their books as much as defaming the Dems, started the daily damning tirades with a two month warm up for 2004 by ripping Gore's poor book sales. What a bad, bad man.

But Gore finally gets the last laugh on his daily critics. With Gore pulling out, the "I invented the Internet," and "Love Story was about me" lines can be flushed down the drain. The fact that Al Gore never uttered either of those lines never stopped the conservative talkies from repeating them ad infinitum.

Gore, even with 2004 so far in the distance, was AM's whipping boy. Clinton's Harlem move was really the last fresh grist for the talkers' hammer. Talk radio really never got a handle on making monsters out of Daschle and Gephardt. They tried, but both of these guys are so nice (boring) that it really never stuck. Besides, neither will get any heat in 2004. Hillary will be pummeled years after she dies, but she will not be running in '04.

But not to worry, give them a few days and they'll be back. Ripping into Kerry's hair, Lieberman's left move when he signed on with Gore, and Edwards'...I don't know...he must have done something horrible. Still there's nothing you can get a "wow, I can really get off hating these guys"handle on. Al Sharpton is the easiest target but his is just a candidacy wish of the Right.

However I write not to bury talk radio but to advise them.

In a recent poll asking Democrats who they would vote for if Gore did not run, the candidate receiving the most votes...? Not Leiberman, not Kerry, not Hillary...not even Sheen. The highest percent of those asked went for Other/Unsure at 29% to Lieberman's 27%.

So until the Democratic Party waits for some actual organism to jump atop the polls the boys on the AM dial can get things started by painting Other/Unsure as being: anti-business, pro abortion (never call it "pro-choice"), pro-reparations, a womanizer (or manizer), a union-patsy, a Clinton-pal and a fan of Barbara Streisand. Most important...remember, a vote for Other/Unsure is a vote against America.
