A jewel of a fracas; Chuck Barris sounds the gong!; too cool for parochial school?; more

http://www.jewishworldreview.com | Jewelry designers to the stars David and Sybil Yurman spiced up InStyle magazine's cocktail party at Spice Market Monday night when they got into an altercation with a party guest who ended up hurling a drink at them.

Details of the confrontation were sketchy Tuesday — and neither the Yurmans nor other witnesses would get on the phone with me — but I hear that things got testy when Sybil emphatically ordered a noisy group at the next table to quiet down.

At one point, I'm told, she allegedly exchanged bitter words and then lunged at one of the partygoers — the guest of an InStyle fashion type.

I hear that the guest — described by an InStyle staffer, maybe ironically, as "a young gentleman" — left the scene, only to return with a full wine glass and throw it at both Yurmans, causing the glass to shatter.

I hear that the wine-hurler then departed, and the Yurmans stayed on.

Tuesday, a spokeswoman for the Yurmans told me: "The whole situation was very intense. There was an incident that was resolved quickly, and the Yurmans stayed on and had a good time."

CHUCK BARRIS SOUNDS THE GONG!

Reality TV founding father Chuck Barris — the man behind "The Dating Game," "The Newlywed Game," and other low points in the popular culture — says he might have created a monster.

Which will only get worse.

"I think that eventually people will kill somebody," the 75-year-old Barris predicted at a Centennial Luncheon in his honor at the Friars Club Tuesday. "The next thing I think would happen would be a creator, some new guy coming along and saying, 'Here's a show idea: The winner gets to answer a question. If they get that question right they win $100 million. But if they don't, they have to get killed — on television.

"You laugh — but you'll be watching if you live long enough!"

Barris — whose life (and bizarre claim that he was a hit man for the CIA) was dramatized in the 2002 movie "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" — said he can't stand the current crop of reality shows.

"They're mean, angry shows that make fun of their contestants," said the creator of "The Gong Show." "I always thought these contestants on our shows were having the time of their life . . . I think they're humiliated now.

"Today on 'Survivor' and 'Fear Factor' and 'Apprentice' and stuff like that and 'American Idol' — all those shows, they just make mincemeat out of their contestants."

He added: "Back then, the creators were show business people — they were guys who knew about shows. Today they're lawyers and they're business administrators. And all the fun has gone right out of the industry."

THE BRIEFING

NO, THERE ISN'T A SANTA CLAUS: And, according to "The Polar Express" producer/director Robert Zemeckis, the presidential election didn't kill box office returns for the Paramount bomb "Alfie." At the Monday night premiere of his Warner Bros. movie, Zemeckis scoffed at the excuses offered by Paramount exec Wayne Llewellyn for the failure of the Jude Law vehicle. "I think movies are pretty resilient to changes in the economy, in the political weather, and the events that are going on," Zemeckis said by way of answering Llewellyn's claim that "it could be the mood of the country right now. It seems to be the result of the election. Maybe they didn't want to see a guy that slept around." Zemeckis added: "Wouldn't 'The Incredibles' [Pixar's animated hit that grossed $71 million the same weekend as "Alfie" took in $6 million] be affected by the election too? What do they think, that people are tired of politics and are not going to go to the movies?"

TOO COOL FOR PAROCHIAL SCHOOL?: Hapless lip-syncher Ashlee Simpson was all ready to give free concerts at two Louisiana Catholic high schools that won a Clear Channel contest — until the Archdiocese of New Orleans stepped in to stop her. Archdiocese spokesman Father William Maestri tells Us Weekly that insurance and security costs would be prohibitive for concerts at St. Mary's Dominican in New Orleans and Archbishop Chapelle in Metairie. "We have a serious objection to that," Maestri says. "The merits of Ashlee Simpson's music is another issue altogether, and one I am not competent to comment on." But a Chapelle student offered another reason why the pop tart isn't welcome: "We're a Catholic girls' school!"
