Picking over Bones; "W" this!; Motherhood, anyone?; more

http://www.jewishworldreview.com | NEW YORK — Maybe the Yale secret society Skull & Bones isn't as warm and cozy as previously believed. A new book, "Ambushed," reveals that Bonesman David Richards, now a Manhattan real estate lawyer, was the member who tapped Yale junior George W. Bush in 1967. But Richards — who didn't respond to this column's detailed messages Tuesday — tells author Toby Rogers that the worst thing in the world would be for Bush to be re-elected president.

"I think it's pretty grim, I think he has trashed the economy, and I think he has conducted foreign policy badly, and I think he is a bad president," Richards says. "I don't know what he has done well."

Richards, who marched in Selma, Ala., with Martin Luther King Jr., also reveals that he had gotten "quite drunk" with Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge at the 1964 Harvard-Yale football games.

"My personal choice is John Kerry," Richards added, "partly because he has experienced war and has some notion of what it means to send men to die, as he was someone sent to die." But Kerry, a 1966 Yale grad, is also a Bonesman, natch.

PATTI LABELLE IS 60? REALLY?

"Denise, you're a black woman in a white woman's body!" R&B diva Patti LaBelle declared at her 60th birthday party Monday night. "Thanks so much, I love you, Denise Rich, you rich b— — !"

The crowd at the fabulous Rich's equally fabulous Fifth Ave. triplex — a collision of the social planets seldom seen in Manhattan — roared with laughter as they celebrated the glorious Miss Patti.

Guffawing together were socialite-decorator Laura Hunt and Jets owner Woody Johnson's ex, Sale Johnson; pop star Ashanti and Janice Combs, mother of P. Diddy; Baltimore Ravens' star Ray Lewis, actress Angela Bassett, Star Jones of "The View," Thom Filicia of "Queer Eye," and VH1 President Christina Norman.

Denise's onetime pal, Bill Clinton (who notoriously awarded a last-minute presidential pardon to her on-the-lam ex-husband, billionaire Marc Rich) was there in spirit only — gazing from a golden-framed photograph on the mantle, alongside the songwriting hostess and Bill Cosby. Also there was LL Cool J — Miss Patti's next target.

"I knew you back when you didn't have any money!" she told the famed rapper. "You and your wife came to my house and said you were hungry, so I went to Popeye's or Kentucky Fried. . . . My little white girlfriend Diane Beifeld was at the house, and so she said to me, when she saw LL comin' here, 'Who is this Cool Cool LJ?' I said 'Miss white girl, shut the hell up!' She had no clue!"

LaBelle added playfully, "His necklace was full of something. Were you doin' diamonds then or were you fakin' it until you made it?"

LL Cool J flashed a sheepish smile. "I had a little something," he murmured.

As guests sipped specialty Bacardi mojitos and enjoyed Rich's wrap-around roof deck overlooking Central Park, the DJ set up shop in the living room under an elaborate Calder mobile. When 50 Cent's "In Da Club" came on, LaBelle, clad in an elegant black dress, darted to the dance floor and cut a rug, drawing a huge crowd and a flurry of flashbulbs. She can't be 60!

THE BRIEFING

"W" THIS!: The folks at W Hotels (which sell baseball caps and other accessories featuring a logo of the letter "W") are rattling their sabers at President Bush's re-election campaign (whose Web site, georgewbush.com, sells baseball caps and other accessories featuring a logo of the letter "W"). I'm told that lawyers for the trendy hotel chain are getting ready to send a severe letter to the Bushies. But for now, a W spokesperson told me Monday: "We are flattered that the president decided to use our corporate icon. However, it is causing confusion in the marketplace. We are looking into the matter." A Bush campaign spokesman didn't return my call.

MOTHERHOOD, ANYONE?: Yes, she has a shotgun forehand, but has tennis babe Anna Kournikova also had a shotgun wedding? Us Weekly reports that the 23-year-old Russian glamazon has tied the knot with 29-year-old pop crooner Enrique Iglesias, and that she might very well be pregnant. The lovebirds — she, flashing a huge pink diamond — were spotted outside the Bond St. Lounge in Miami Beach when a passerby wished them well with their engagement. "That is old news," Iglesias replied. "We were married five weeks ago." The mag adds that during a recent dinner in Los Angeles, a pal rubbed Kournikova's belly and offered congratulations.

TROUBLE IN THE LOHAN FAMILY: Teen queen Lindsay Lohan — whose dad Michael got into a fistfight with his brother Sunday during a house party celebrating Lindsay's little brother's First Communion — isn't responsible for her kin's bad behavior. But she's front and center on the TV show "Celebrity Justice," in a report that her parents might lose their Long Island home because Michael Lohan hasn't repaid a $160,000 loan from businessman John Gerard. On Tuesday, Lohan told the show that he's trying to settle the suit.
