Teresa nailed?

http://www.jewishworldreview.com | Just because Teresa Heinz Kerry is a billionaire doesn't mean that she doesn't pinch pennies.

I hear that folks at George's Salon in Washington's Four Seasons Hotel — where Democratic nominee John Kerry's wife gets her nails done — are complaining that the Heinz Ketchup heiress wants the manicurist to service her at home, a few blocks from the luxury hotel in Georgetown, but is balking at the $90 charge.

Last week, a spy for this column overheard a George's manicurist say that Heinz Kerry has been haggling over the fee for her home manicures — three times the $30 it costs in the salon.

I'm told that the manicurist quoted Heinz Kerry as insisting that the salon should give her a break because she's a prestigious client and George's is lucky to have her.

When this column dialed George's Monday, an unidentified woman answered the phone and confirmed that Heinz Kerry is a client, but said her manicurist wasn't available.

In another phone call, a salon employee who identified himself only as "Rick" told this column, "We don't talk about our clients," and suggested speaking to owner Denise Kazic. After Kazic didn't return a call, Rick announced that Kazic wasn't going to field any questions about Heinz Kerry or anything else.

Heinz Kerry's campaign spokeswoman, Marla Romash, denied this column's account of alleged nickel-and-diming.

"It's not true," Romash said. "She has used a manicurist from that salon for a number of years. It is a good relationship that has extended over many years. A lot of women have their nails done at home. The fact that they've worked together for a long time indicates that there's a good relationship there.

"But anything else you're hearing is not true," Romash said. "I suggest you get a better nail file before you file."

Huh?

"That," Romash explained, "was a bad joke."

MORE CLUBBING IN NEW YORK

Just what status-anxious Manhattanites need: another VIP social club.

For months, folks have been buzzing about Frederick's, the latest venture from brothers Laurent and Frederick Lesort. It's supposed to open in September to "a limited number of private membership opportunities for a dynamic group of individuals," as the brochure so exquisitely puts it.

Now this column hears who, exactly, made the cut.

Among the charter members are Miramax honcho Harvey Weinstein, PR whizzes Lizzie Grubman and Emilia Fanjul Pfeifler, cosmetic queen Aerin Lauder, gals-about-town Lauren Davis and Cornelia Guest, and high-end shoe designer Holly Dunlap.

Although Frederick's will allow non-members inside, the A-listers who pony up the $850 annual fee will have access to a private lounge protected by a high-tech fingerprint scanning system. And they won't have to schlep all the way down to the meatpacking district: Frederick's is conveniently located at Fifth Avenue and 58th Street.

"I always need places to host events," Dunlap said Tuesday. "It's good for the ego to have these members-only clubs — it makes people feel all the more cooler."

But is she joining to lord it over her lessers by spying on common folk through the two-way mirrors in the exclusive members-only area?

"I didn't even know they were going to allow common folk," Dunlap said. "I might have to retract my membership."

She was joking. Possibly.

But Dunlap might want to delay her resignation — at least until after a planned shindig, hosted by J. Lo, for Frederick's inaugural week.

THE BRIEFING

A WHOLE LOTTA EATIN' GOIN' ON?: After the horrific battering in the press over Mary-Kate Olsen's sojourn in rehab for anorexia (the publicly stated reason), the Mary-Kate and Ashley Brand is getting a nice rehabilitation from Us Weekly. The upcoming issue offers Mary-Kate's first post-rehab interview, conducted on the fly over lunch at Ivy at the Shore in Santa Monica: "I'm doing great. I'm just getting back into everything now. It's great to be home." The same day she consumed lunch — according to the mag's weeklong diary — Mary-Kate had dinner with boyfriend David Katzenberg at Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills. The diary is full of Mary-Kate's lunches, breakfasts and dinners as she reportedly puts on 10 pounds. Is Us being used? Editor Janice Min Tuesday conceded: "I think when any celebrity does an interview with a publication, there's always an agenda."

IF IT DOESN'T FIT, YOU MUST OMIT: Tuesday's photo-op visit to Citicorp Center by First Lady Laura Bush and daughters Jenna and Barbara was splashed large by the local media — but not even acknowledged in The New York Times. "We simply had more news — both stories and pictures — than we could accommodate. There was no calculated decision to omit that event," Times spokesman Toby Usnik explained. Meanwhile, in another appearance unworthy of mention in the newspaper of record, the three Bush women dined Tuesday night at Nobu.

BOOTING UP?: That was rabble-rousing Republican Kid Rock paying homage to retired four-star Gen. Tommy Franks Tuesday night at Franks' book party on the deck of the aircraft carrier Intrepid. "If I'd known that Tommy was going to show up at a Manhattan book party wearing cowboy boots, I would have worn mine, too," the sneakered ex-Pamela Anderson boyfriend told me, eyeing the general's pricey alligator numbers from high-end bootmaker T.O. Stanley. Kid Rock confided that once this Iraq business is over and done with, "We should go on to clean up the next country, and then the next one." Maybe 'cause he'd like to visit Iran and North Korea with the U.S.O.?
