Consumer Reports

Dem author tried to sell his U.S. citizenship to the highest bidder; Benny gets the gate; more

http://www.jewishworldreview.com | Has high-flying celebrity manager Benny Medina crashed and burned with another of his mega-star clients?

This column hears that Puerto Rican pop phenom Ricky Martin — who has been on the manager's roster for a mere 10 months — has abruptly dismissed Medina, who only recently smoothed over his nasty breakup from ex-client Jennifer Lopez.

Thursday, after I repeatedly phoned Medina's Los Angeles office and reps for Martin for a response to this column's scoop, the two men issued a joint statement portraying their separation as friendly.

Martin's PR rep, Ken Sunshine, orchestrated a conference call to this column with Medina on the line.

"Officially, Ricky Martin and [Medina's company] Handprint Entertainment are no longer working together," Sunshine told me, "and this has been done in a very amicable way."

Medina, meanwhile, told me that he and Martin mutually decided not to renew their management agreement — which he said expired last month — because Medina is too busy producing television and film projects.

"All I can say is there is absolutely no conflict involved," Medina said. "Opportunity is causing us to make this decision — things he wants to pursue and things I want to do, which are individual to us and different from the collective."

Medina said Martin has a huge album coming out next year and a full-dress concert tour that will require more time and attention than he can spare.

"He needs somebody to navigate those waters for him," Medina said, adding he still intends to pursue movie and television projects with Martin.

But industry insiders speculated Thursday that a frustrated Martin — who has been planning a huge comeback after a period under the radar — canned the big-talking Medina precisely because he had yet to make good on promises of movie deals and other career sweeteners.

The new album — to be released with much fanfare by Martin's record label, Columbia — was already in the pipeline well before Medina signed on.

Martin had earlier dismissed longtime manager Angelo Medina (no relation), and recently settled dueling lawsuits resulting from their divorce.

STRANGER IN A STRANGE LAND

Apparently unable to cope with four more years of George W. Bush in the White House, New York Democrat Jason Eaton tried to sell his U.S. citizenship to the highest bidder.

The day after President Bush decisively beat Sen. John Kerry in the election, Eaton — a 32-year-old Greenwich Village resident and children's book author — listed his citizenship on eBay.

The very modest starting price was $10.

Eaton's online description: "Absolutely priceless in 2000, its value has been steadily decreasing over the last four years. It is only in fair condition now, but can certainly be enjoyed by the many gun-owners, war-mongers, creationists, plutocrats and homophobes that make up 51 percent of the country."

On Thursday, Eaton told this column: "This was the only thing I could do to feel better about the election. The only element of seriousness is that I'm seriously horrified by what happened.

"For four years, you think: It's the administration, not the American people. And now you realize it is the American people — 51 percent of them. Living in New York makes you forget that."

In the first 12 hours, multiple bidders placed their bets and the price jumped to $24. But by Thursday afternoon, the auction site had removed the listing, with eBay spokesman Hani Durzy explaining: "You must legally be able to sell the item to list it on eBay."

THE BRIEFING NO FREE LUNCH: Ex-Los Angeles Lakers and Chicago Bulls coach Phil Jackson has apparently had his fill of warring hoopsters Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal. Pushing his new book on the YES Network's "CenterStage" show, airing on Sunday, Jackson loses his appetite when host Michael Kay asks if he'd consider breaking bread with his former stars. "I probably wouldn't have lunch with them, no," Jackson says. What about Michael Jordan? "If Jordan was around, I would see him," Jackson says.
