'50 IS A SCARY NUMBER'

[THE WEEKEND issue begins after this sidebar. But before going there, PLEASE read this large font, but actually short, letter. ]

As I read the words, I wondered: Sure marking a half-century of life is a time for contemplation --- but is it scary?"

(A reader letter I published earlier in the week mentioned my upcoming milestone birthday.)

Turns out the message wasn't about me. At least not personally. It was about something that I wrote.

Those who value this site were asked to donate $50 toward its upkeep and improvement. I described $50 as being "less than a buck-a-week". My intent was to stress that a minimal amount when multiplied can do a lot of good. A LOT.

To which came the reply: "50 is a scary number."

The reader didn't write why that amount was too much --- "scary". The automated line added to the message announced it was typed on one of the most expensive smartphones on the market. Pleading poverty couldn't have been what was meant.

A number of folks have written to plead poverty; apologize for not chipping-in. Which, of course, was gracious but certainly not necessary. I told them as much.

My response was/ still is: "Obviously, this appeal wasn't intended for you." But I did make a request of each.

Could they do some extra act of kindness for my Divine merit and offer, if it's not too much trouble, a sincerely uttered prayer on my behalf. To me, either -- and both -- are priceless.

But for those who are not suffering poverty yet still think "50 is a scary number", how about not "a buck-a-week". Rather, a dime-a-day. A one-time donation of $36.50.

Or, for those who can afford it, multiples of that, for readers who'd like to but can't.

I intend to make sure JWR survives --- and thrives. For those who need proof before taking action, I will reveal something that will leave JWR readers proud and thrilled. But that must wait til next week.

PLEASE make sure that your expressions of kindness don't.

I'm counting on you!

All donations are tax-deductible. They can be made through our secure online site or by making out a check and mailing it to the sponsoring foundation (Keren Yehoshua V'Yisroel/JWR) -- marked in the "memo section" for "Internet Education Project" -- at:
