Can Castro score a coup?
Add the country of Cuba to the list of those who want the 2012
On first glance, it would be easy to dismiss Fidel Castro's bid
to land the games, but there may be far more than meets the eye
in this proposed bid.
Cuba doesn't have the billions of dollars needed to stage the
games and the Castro doctrine would not allow corporate
money to flow into the country under normal circumstances.
But Cuba is very isolated from the global economy because of
United States sanctions and this Cuban effort to land the
olympics may be a signal that Cuba is ready to once again try
and pressure the us to lift the decades long sanctions.
Cuba may also be looking at how China is being incorporated
into the global economy after landing the 2008 summer games.
But Fidel Castro's recent crackdown on dissidents does not
bode well for the Cuban bid and that does not play well when
you add that to the fact Castro doesn't have the money to
stage an olympics.
Still, the Cuban bid may be more about
diplomacy than actually holding a worldwide athletic
