We got bitten on purchase of dog
DEAR BRUCE: We've been swindled and haven't a clue how to straighten it out. I know that you are a dog lover, so you will understand. We saw an ad in the paper for puppies for sale -- AKC, champion stock, etc., you know the drill. We went over to the house, and, sure enough, they had a litter of five of the most beautiful pups you have ever seen. We selected one and when she was 8 weeks old picked her up. We wanted a puppy for breeding and this seemed like a beautiful dog. The breeder told us they would send us the papers from the American Kennel Club in a week or so.
Weeks passed and no papers. We finally called them, and to our dismay the phone number was disconnected. We drove to their house, and someone else had moved in. It turns out they were just renting the house on a month-to-month basis. Now we have a pup whom we are in love with and can in no way give up, but there are no papers, which means no breeding. What can we do? -- R.N., Shreveport, La.
DEAR R.N.: There is not a thing in the world that you can do except love your puppy. Unfortunately, without the appropriate papers the dog is worthless as breeding stock. Any puppies that she may have are effectively mutts. You would be doing the animal population a kindness by having the animal spayed.
There are a lot of bad people out there that raise pups. They put an ad in the paper and pawn off what are supposed to be very good breeding material on an unsuspecting public. When you've been home with that puppy for a week, they know they have you; there is no way that you would give that puppy up. Those kinds of people really deserve a special place in hell. The only defense against being taken is to be certain that you are dealing with a recognized, reputable breeder.
DEAR BRUCE: We have lived in our home for eight years and have always been happy here. The neighbors were wonderful. Unfortunately the people that live to the left of us got into financial trouble and had to sell their house quickly. They responded to an ad they saw in the paper: "Will buy your house for cash." They sold their house for a very low price to a speculator. He, in turn, put the house up for rent immediately. That's when our troubles began.
These are the tenants from you know where. They don't keep the property up, they have two dogs that are constantly barking, their kids are undisciplined and their driveway looks like a junkyard. We have contacted the owner, and he seems to feel that as long as the rent is paid everything is fine. Can you suggest anything shy of us selling our house? -- O.H. , via e-mail
DEAR O.H.: You have got a serious situation, and I truly empathize with you. The fact that the speculator is only interested in rent dollars is not going to help you any.
There may be property maintenance codes in your community that must be met. I would check with the code enforcement officer in your community. Aside from that, all the things that you have mentioned are abrasive but not illegal. As long as the cars are licensed I'm sure they can be parked in the driveway, and there is no way that you can control their kids. It's truly a shame that there are people like this who impose their slovenly manners on others. You might inquire as to what other properties this speculator owns. While it may not seem a very nice thing to do, you could take a look at all of his properties and every place there is any kind of a violation, turn him in and let him know why you are doing it.
