• 1547, Henry VIII died and 9-year-old Edward VI became king of England

• 1573, articles of Warsaw Confederation are signed, sanctioning freedom of religion in Poland

• 1754, Horace Walpole, in a letter to Horace Mann, coins the word serendipity

• 1782, the U.S. Congress authorized creation of the Great Seal of the United States

• 1871, Franco-Prussian War: Siege of Paris ends in French defeat and an armistice

• 1887, in a snowstorm at Fort Keogh, Montana, the world's largest snowflakes are reported, being 15 inches (38 cm) wide and 8 inches (20 cm) thick

• 1909, United States troops leave Cuba with the exception of Guantanamo Bay Naval Base after being there since the Spanish-American War

• 1915, the United States Coast Guard was created as President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill merging the Life-Saving Service and Revenue Cutter Service

• 1916, Louis D. Brandeis becomes the first Jew appointed to the United States Supreme Court

• 1917, municipally owned streetcars take to the streets of San Francisco

• 1945, during World War II, Allied supplies began reaching China over the newly reopened Burma Road

• 1958, the Lego company received a patent for its toy building blocks

• 1973, a cease-fire officially went into effect in the Vietnam War

• 1974, Israel lifted its siege of Suez City

• 1981, Ronald Reagan lifts remaining domestic petroleum price and allocation controls in the United States helping to end the 1979 energy crisis and begin the 1980s oil glut.

• 1986, STS-51-L mission (Space Shuttle Challenger disaster), Space Shuttle Challenger breaks apart 73 seconds after liftoff killing all seven astronauts onboard, including Christa McAuliffe, who was supposed to be the first teacher in space

• 1994, the first trial of accused murderer Lyle Menendez ends in a mistrial. He and his brother Erik are later found guilty and sentenced to life in prison without parole

• 1995, the United States and Vietnam agreed to exchange low-level diplomats and open liaison offices in each other's capital cities

• 2000, Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin, the Florida nun selected by Attorney General Janet Reno as a neutral party in the custody battle over Elian Gonzalez, sought unsuccessfully to persuade Reno to change her mind about returning the six-year-old to Cuba.

• 2003, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's Likud party and other hawkish parties won a resounding victory in parliamentary elections

• 2005, Iraqis overseas began three days of voting in 14 nations. ALSO: European scientists confirmed the first known case of "mad cow" disease in a goat

• 2009, President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House approved, 244-188, a huge $819 billion stimulus bill with Republicans unanimous in opposition

• 2010, major world powers opened talks in London seeking an end to the conflict in Afghanistan. ALSO: President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden announced $8 billion in federal grants for high-speed rail projects nationwide during a visit to Tampa, Fla.

• 2012, the Arab League suspended its monitoring mission in Syria because of a sharp spike in violence on the same day opposition activists reported almost 100 deaths

• 2014, seeking to energize his second term, President Barack Obama vowed in his State of the Union address to sidestep Congress "whenever and wherever" necessary to narrow economic disparities between rich and poor

• 2018, Protesters gathered across Russia to support the call from opposition leader Alexei Navalny to boycott the March presidential election; Navalny himself was arrested while walking to the Moscow demonstration
