And the Democrats think this is popular! They believe that the public is anxious for the government to realize extra revenue to shrink the deficit and think they will approve of these tactics.
Of course, they say that they are only aimed at rich people. We all understand that the threshold of being rich drops down to the level of a limbo bar when the IRS is applying it.
So, what are the Republicans going to do? They can't stop it from passing because it's part of the reconciliation package but next year they can take bold action. Here's what I propose:
If we take both houses — or even just one — when the 2023-24 budget comes up for a vote in Congress, I believe that we Republicans should defund the extra IRS agents. Strike out the appropriation.
The reconciliation bill now passing is only an authorization. To spend the money and hire the agents, they need an appropriation, and we can stop them.
A simple majority will be enough to strike the appropriation because we will use the same reconciliation bill tactics that the Democrats used to hire them in the first place.
Biden will veto the bill and we in Congress will refuse to pass an appropriation bill that includes money for the IRS agents. A government shut down is inevitable. Republicans are gun shy about government shutdowns because they've lost their shirts in four the last five.
I oversaw Clinton's attempts to be beat them when they shut down the government in 1995 and 1996. But this shut down will be over the specific hiring of the extra IRS agent and I think we Republicans will have the public solidly on our side.
Eventually the Republicans will win. The agents will be defunded, and this threat will be lifted from our brows.
