McAuliffe Rides Again?

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | The unbelievable news came in on late last week. Some leaders in the Democratic Party, and I use the term loosely as are you a leader when you don't control anything, want Terry McAuliffe to stay on. Let's get this straight. This is the man that has raised money but has been at the helm of the Democratic Party under the biggest string of losses in the Party's history.

One of those leaders, Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca), is the minority leader in the House of Representatives. Under her leadership, the Democrats have lost seats after actually taking a few back in 1998, they are in the worst position since the 1940s as far as the number of seats they hold in the House. She will retain her post also. Last week, when pressed by a reporter about the Democratic Party's message, she said she believed that the message was mainstream but that the American people didn't understand it.

Therein lies the problem. Americans just don't understand what is good for them. Especially in those fast growing Red States in the South and West, Democrats discuss with other Democrats at cocktail parties in San Francisco and New York how those rednecks just don't know what it good for them and if they just understood liberals only want what's best for them, it would be all right.

We have all seen the map of the Red and Blue counties and it is dramatic, but when you look at how the votes were stacked, it is even more dramatic.

This maps show the concentration of Democratic voters in the last election and you see that while liberal thought may not be diluted in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago, their strength is being challenged in small to medium cities and throughout the fruited plain of this country.

The only person that had a handle on this was Maynard Jackson. Before his death last year, he ran for the Chairmanship of the Democratic Party, saying that the only Democrat that was successful in the 90's was Bill Clinton and he was right and he is still right. If Democrats don't go back to the grassroots and build up from there, they are a dead party. They may be a dead party now. If they put Terry McAuliffe back in, they will ensure their own demise.

Far be it from me to tell Democrats what to do. However, it is best for America to have two viable parties to choose from for candidates. The system now supports the two biggest parties with laws that suppress the formation of other parties and makes it difficult if not impossible for a new party to rise from the grassroots of this country. So a weak Democrat Party ensures the domination of the Republican Party. That is good for the country only if Republicans act like Republicans and not like watered down Democrats.

So go ahead and put Terry McAuliffe at the top again. He'll raise money, but Democrats will continue to lose. The only hope in this race is Donny Fowler the son of a former DNC Chairman. He has worked in the Red States and he could reorganize this party on the grassroots level. The Party won't take heed, though; they are on a self destruct that may not be able to be stopped. Maybe that is what it will take for a new national party to emerge.
