1779, during the American Revolution: Samuel Huntington is elected President of the Continental Congress, succeeding John Jay

1787, the newly completed United States Constitution is voted on by the U.S. Congress to be sent to the state legislatures for approval

1791, France becomes the first European country to emancipate its Jewish population

1850, flogging was abolished as a form of punishment in the U.S. Navy

1889, the first General Conference on Weights and Measures (CGPM) defines the length of a meter as the distance between two lines on a standard bar of an alloy of platinum with ten percent iridium, measured at the melting point of ice

1920, eight members of the Chicago White Sox were indicted for allegedly throwing the 1919 World Series against the Cincinnati Reds in what became known as the "Black Sox" scandal. (Despite initial confessions by several of the players, all were acquitted at trial; still, all eight were banned from baseball for life.)

1924, two U.S. Army planes landed in Seattle, having completed the first round-the-world flight in 175 days

1928, Sir Alexander Fleming notices a bacteria-killing mould growing in his laboratory, discovering what later became known as penicillin

1939, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union agree on a division of Poland after their invasion during World War II

1958, France ratifies a new Constitution of France; the French Fifth Republic is then formed upon the formal adoption of the new constitution on October 4. Guinea rejects the new constitution, voting for independence instead

1961, a military coup in Damascus effectively ends the United Arab Republic, the union between Egypt and Syria

2005, the U.S. Treasury unveiled the new $10 bill, featuring splashes of red, yellow and orange

2008, SpaceX launches the first ever private spacecraft, the Falcon 1 into orbit

2009, Iran tested its longest-range missiles and warned they could reach any place that threatens the country, including Israel, parts of Europe and U.S. military bases in the Mideast

2014, tens of thousands of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, members of the Occupy Central movement, clashed with riot police resulting in 26 injuries and 78 arrests

2015, President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin, meeting at the United Nations, agreed to discuss a political transition in Syria but remained at odds about what that would mean for Syria leader Bashar Assad's future. ALSO: Former prison worker Joyce Mitchell, who'd helped two murderers escape from a maximum-security lockup, said she regretted her "horrible mistake" as she was sentenced in Plattsburgh, New York, to up to seven years behind bars.
