1999, NASA announces that it has lost contact with the Mars Climate Orbiter

2001, President George W. Bush returned the American flag to full staff at Camp David, symbolically ending a period of national mourning. ALSO: Thousands gathered at New York's Yankee Stadium to offer prayers for the victims of terrorism; Mayor Rudolph Giuliani pledged that "our skyline will rise again."

2002, the first public version of the web browser Mozilla Firefox ("Phoenix 0.1") is released.

2003, speaking at the United Nations, President Bush rejected calls from France and Germany to hasten the transfer of power in Iraq, insisting the shift to self-government could be "neither hurried nor delayed." ALSO: A federal appeals court unanimously put California's recall election back on the calendar for Oct. 7

2007, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad left Tehran for New York to address the United Nations; state media quoted him as saying the American people were eager for different opinions about the world, and that he was looking forward to providing them with "correct and clear information

2009, the U.S. House of Representatives voted for a 13-week, $1.4 billion extension of unemployment benefits for 27 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, where the unemployment rate was 8.5 percent or higher. ALSO: President Barack Obama told Israeli and Palestinian leaders in their first trilateral talks they must begin "permanent" peace negotiations "soon" and urged them to be ready to take risks

2010, the U.S. delegation walked out of a U.N. speech by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad after he said some in the world had speculated that the U.S. staged the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in an attempt to assure Israel's survival. ALSO: Congressional Republicans unveiled their "Pledge to America," a strongly worded manifesto promising to return government to the people.

2011, the 'Palestinians' officially requested statehood in an appearance before the U.N. Security Council

2012, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, asked if his wife, Hillary, might run for president in 2016, said: "Whatever she does I am for her first, last and always. She is the ablest [of potential candidates]. I know I am biased but I think she demonstrated as senator and as secretary of state that she has extraordinary ability."

2015, Chinese President Xi Jinping, visiting Seattle, addressed Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos, billionaire investor Warren Buffett and other top American and Chinese business leaders, vowing his country would work to remove barriers to foreign investment and improve intellectual property protections. ALSO: Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn resigned, days after admitting that the world's top-selling carmaker had rigged diesel emissions to pass U.S. tests during his tenure; Winterkorn denied any personal wrongdoing.
