On this day in . . .

1784, Western North Carolina (now eastern Tennessee) declares itself an independent state under the name of Franklin; it wasn't accepted into the United States, and only lasted for four years

1814, first lady Dolley Madison saves a portrait of George Washington from being looted by British troops during the war of 1812

1839, the United Kingdom captures Hong Kong as a base as it prepares for war with Qing China. The ensuing 3-year conflict will later be known as the First Opium War

1904, Harold D. Weed of Canastota, New York, is issued U.S. Patent No. 768,495 for his "Grip-Tread for Pneumatic Tires," a non-skid tire chain to be used on automobiles in order to increase traction on roads slick with mud, snow or ice

1914, during World War I: Japan declares war on Germany and bombs Qingdao, China

1929, the Hebron Massacre: Arab attack on the Jewish community in Hebron in the British Mandate of Palestine, continuing until the next day, resulted in the death of 65-68 Jews and the remaining Jews being forced to leave the city. The founding of the modern day Israel -- used by practitioners of that "religion of peace" as an excuse for murder and mayhem -- would not come into existence til nearly two decades later

1939, during World War II: Germany and the Soviet Union sign a non-aggression treaty, the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. In a secret addition to the pact, the Baltic states, Finland, Romania, and Poland are divided between the two nations

1942, during World War II: Beginning of the Battle of Stalingrad

1944, during World War II: Marseille liberated. ALSO: King Michael of Romania dismisses the pro-Nazi government of General Antonescu, who is arrested. Romania switches sides from the Axis to the Allies

1982, Beirut Christian leader Beshir Gemayel was elected president of Lebanon. He was assassinated less than one month later by a practitioner of that "religion of peace". He was succeeded by his brother, Amin

1989, as punishment for betting on baseball, Cincinnati Reds manager Pete Rose accepts a settlement that includes a lifetime ban from the game. A heated debate continues to rage as to whether Rose, a former player who remains the game's all-time hits leader, should be given a second chance

1990, Saddam Hussein appears on Iraqi state television with a number of Western "guests" (actually hostages) to try to prevent the Gulf War

1991, Russian Republic President Boris Yeltsin pressured Soviet President Gorbachev into replacing his Cabinet in the wake of a failed coup

1999, Berlin once again became the capital of Germany

2001, Rep. Gary Condit, D-Calif., interviewed by Connie Chung on ABC, denied any involvement in the disappearance of Washington intern Chandra Levy. (Ingmar Guandique, an illegal alien from El Salvador, was convicted in Nov. 2010 of murdering Levy, and was sentenced to 60 years in prison.) ALSO: Thierry Devaux, a Frenchman using a motor-driven parachute, was rescued and arrested after becoming snagged on the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. AND: NATO soldiers streamed into Macedonia as part of a mission to help end six months of ethnic hostilities by collecting and destroying rebel weapon

1996, Osama bin Laden issues message entitled 'A declaration of war against the Americans occupying the land of the two holy places'

2005, Israeli suburbs won in a defensive war become Judenrein, as their last Jewish citizens are forced from their homes. Shortly thereafter, one-time synagogues were torched and economical infrastructure left in place are similarly destroyed. "Peace", amazingly, still has yet to come to the Middle East

2010, Tiger Woods and his wife, Elin Nordegren, officially divorced. ALSO: Rescue workers at a caved-in gold and copper mine in northern Chile made contact with 33 men trapped nearly 2,300 feet underground for 17 days who had found refuge in a small emergency shelter that had water and ventilation. In a remarkable, unrelenting effort, all hands were rescued two months later

2011, a U.N. report said more than 2,200 people had been killed in Syria's 5-month long crackdown on anti-government demonstrations

2012, Lance Armstrong chose not to pursue arbitration in the drug case brought against him by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, setting the stage for his Tour de France titles to be stripped and his name to be all but wiped from the record books of the sport he once ruled.

2013, Nidal Malik Hasan was convicted of killing 13 people and wounding dozens of others in a November 2009 gunfire attack at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas. A practitioner of that "religion of peace", he praised Allah before his mass murder. Ex-president Obama wanted the hideous act to be regarded as "workplace violence"
