988, the city of Dublin is founded on the banks of the river Liffey

1212, the most severe of several early fires of London burns most of the city to the ground

1778, during the American Revolution: Louis XVI of France declares war on the Kingdom of Great Britain

1821, the United States takes possession of its newly bought territory of Florida from Spain

1850, Millard Fillmore is inaugurated as the 13th President of the United States upon the death of President Zachary Taylor, 16 months into his term

1913, Death Valley, California hits 134 fahrenheit, the highest temperature recorded in the United States

1919, President Woodrow Wilson personally delivered the Treaty of Versailles to the Senate, and urged its ratification. (However, the Senate rejected it.)

1925, Meher Baba, an Indian mystic and spiritual master who declared publicly in 1954 that he was the Avatar of the age, begins his silence of 44 years. His followers observe Silence Day on this date in commemoration

1929, American paper currency was reduced in size as the government began issuing bills that were approximately 25 percent smaller

1938, Howard Hughes sets a new record by completing a 91 hour airplane flight around the world

1940, during World War II: Vichy France government is established. ALSO: The German Luftwaffe begin to hit British convoys in the English Channel thus starting the battle (this start date is contested, though)

1951, armistice talks aimed at ending the Korean War began at Kaesong

1962, Telstar, the world's first communications satellite, is launched into orbit

1985, Coca-Cola, besieged by consumers dissatisfied with the new Coke introduced in April, dusted off the old formula and dubbed it "Coke Classic"

1991, in Moscow, Boris Yeltsin was inaugurated as the first freely elected president of the Russian republic

1992, in Miami, Florida, former Panamanian leader Manuel Noriega is sentenced to 40 years in prison for drug and racketeering violations

2002, the House approved, 310-113, a measure to allow airline pilots to carry guns in the cockpit to defend their planes against terrorists (President George W. Bush later signed the measure into law). ALSO: A unified Senate approved harsh new penalties for corporate fraud and document-shredding (however, the legislation was never enacted)

2005, Hurricane Dennis slams into the Florida Panhandle, causing billions of dollars in damage

General Motors completed its race through bankruptcy with the signing of a contract with the U.S. government, which got 61 percent of the company. The recovery plan included considerable shrinkage, including the closing of factories and layoffs of 21,000 union workers

2011, the space shuttle Atlantis docked with the International Space Station, the final such hookup in orbit. ALSO: Britain's best-selling Sunday tabloid the News of the World, brought down by a phone-hacking scandal, signed off with a simple front page message: "THANK YOU & GOODBYE."

2012, Clashing over the economy, President Barack Obama challenged Mitt Romney to join him in allowing tax hikes for rich Americans like them; Romney dismissed the idea and redirected charges that he had sent jobs overseas when he worked in private equity, calling Obama the real "outsourcer-in-chief."

2014, Hamas, responding to Israeli airstrikes against Palestinian militants in Gaza, released a video saying it would carry out terrorist attacks in Israel. The narrator said, "Wait for suicide attacks on every bus, cafe and street." ALSO: Germany demanded that the CIA station chief in Berlin leave the country as a new round of allegations of U.S. espionage worsened friction between the two allies

2018, divers rescued the last of the 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooded cave in Thailand, where they'd been trapped for more than two weeks

2019, Britain's ambassador to the United States, Kim Darroch, resigned following the leak of diplomatic cables that reflected his unflattering opinions about the Trump administration
