1680, the first confirmed tornado in America kills a servant at Cambridge, Massachusetts

1775, the Olive Branch Petition is adopted by the Continental Congress of the Thirteen Colonies

1776, the Declaration of Independence is read aloud in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Col. John Nixon and the Liberty Bell is famously rung

1896, William Jennings Bryan delivers his Cross of Gold speech advocating bimetalism at the 1896 Democratic National Convention in Chicago

1932, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaches its lowest level of the Great Depression, bottoming out at 41.22

1947, reports are broadcast that a UFO has crashed landed in Roswell, New Mexico. ALSO: Demolition work began in New York City to make way for the new permanent headquarters of the United Nations

1948, the United States Air Force accepts its first female recruits into a program called Women in the Air Force (WAF)

1950, President Harry S. Truman named Gen. Douglas MacArthur commander in chief of U.N. forces in Korea

1960, Francis Gary Powers is charged with espionage resulting from his flight over the Soviet Union

1982, assassination attempt against former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein in Dujail

1997, NATO invites the Czech Republic, Hungary, and Poland to join the alliance in 1999

2009, Group of Eight leaders, including President Barack Obama met in L'Aquila, Italy. They pledged to dramatically cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2050

2010, a French surgeon said he had performed the first successful transplant of a complete face, giving a 35-year-old disfigured man every feature, including tear ducts

2011, the Atlantis began the 135th and final mission of the U.S. space shuttle program that started in 1981, a two-week voyage to the International Space Station with a cargo of supplies and spare parts

2014, in an escalating conflict, Israeli airstrikes pounded the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip and rockets were fired at Israel. A statement from the military said the strikes were made to "stop the terror Israel's citizens face on a daily basis." ALSO: President Barack Obama appealed to Congress for $3.7 billion in emergency spending to deal with the illegal alien crisis on the nation's southern border, where unaccompanied children were showing up by the thousands (Republican lawmakers rejected the request)

2015, on a rough day for tech, a "router issue" at United Airlines suspended all of the company's flights for nearly two hours, leading to 800 flight delays and 60 cancellations; a "technical problem" at the New York Stock Exchange halted trading; and the Wall Street Journal's website, WSJ.com, had "technical difficulties." (Government officials said it did not appear that the incidents were related, or the result of sabotage.)

2018, rescuers removed the first of 12 boys from a flooded Thai cave after the soccer team and their coach became trapped. All 13 would be rescued days later, but a Thai Navy SEAL died in the process

2019, Iran began enriching uranium to 4.5%, just breaking the limit set by its nuclear deal with world powers. ALSO: Billionaire financier Jeffrey Epstein was charged with sexually abusing dozens of underage girls; the newly unsealed federal indictment came more than a decade after he secretly cut a deal with federal prosecutors to dispose of nearly identical allegations. (Epstein would be found dead,hanging in his jail cell a month later; it was ruled a suicide.) AND: The so-called "Terminator" of the Democratic Republic of the Congo -- Bosco Ntaganda -- was found guilty of war crimes by the International Criminal Court in the Netherland
