ALSO: Microsoft officially unveiled its Xbox 360, a video game console boasting improved graphics over its predecessor

• 2007, voters in the Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch became the first in the nation to back an ordinance prohibiting landlords from renting to most illegal immigrants

• 2009, the government warned that without changes, Social Security would be depleted in 2037, and the Medicare trust fund would become insolvent in 2017. ALSO: Five men, who pledged loyalty to al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, were convicted in a plot to blow up FBI buildings and Chicago's Sears Tower

• 2010, a man armed with a meat cleaver entered a central China kindergarten classroom and slaughtered seven children, a teacher and her mother before taking his own life. Seventeen people died and about 100 were wounded in five attacks in Chinese schools in a two-month period

• 2011, a German court sentenced John Demjanjuk, 91, to five years in prison for his role in killing 28,060 Jews as a World War II Nazi concentration camp guard in Poland. Demjanjuk, a Ukrainian who worked for decades in a U.S. auto plant, died the following year

• 2016, a divided U.S. Supreme Court blocked the execution of an Alabama inmate so that a lower court could review claims that strokes and dementia had rendered him incompetent to understand his looming death sentence. (A federal appeals court ruled in March 2017 that Vernon Madison was incompetent, and could not be executed.) ALSO: Susannah Mushatt Jones, recognized at the time as the world's oldest person, died in New York at age 116
