1797, Napoleon I of France conquers Venice

1821, the first big battle of the Greek War of Independence against the Turks occurs in Valtetsi

1865, the first day of the last major land action to take place during the Civil War, resulting in a Confederate victory

1932, the body of the kidnapped son of Charles and Anne Lindbergh was found in a wooded area of Hopewell, N.J

1933, the Federal Emergency Relief Administration and the Agricultural Adjustment Administration were established to provide help for the needy and farmers

1941, Konrad Zuse presented the Z3, the world's first working programmable, fully automatic computer in Berlin

1943, during World War II, Axis forces in North Africa surrendered

1996, authorities in Florida called off the search for possible survivors from the crash of ValuJet Flight 592, a day after the jetliner nose-dived into the Everglades with 110 people on board

2002, former US President Jimmy Carter arrives in Cuba for a five-day visit with Fidel Castro becoming first President of the United States, in or out of office, to visit the island since Castro's 1959 revolution

2005, the Foreign Relations Committee voted 10-8 along party lines to advance John Bolton's nomination to be U.N. ambassador without the customary recommendation that the Senate approve it. ALSO: Microsoft officially unveiled its Xbox 360, a video game console boasting improved graphics over its predecessor

2007, voters in the Dallas suburb of Farmers Branch became the first in the nation to back an ordinance prohibiting landlords from renting to most illegal immigrants

2009, the government warned that without changes, Social Security would be depleted in 2037, and the Medicare trust fund would become insolvent in 2017. ALSO: Five men, who pledged loyalty to al Qaeda and Osama bin Laden, were convicted in a plot to blow up FBI buildings and Chicago's Sears Tower

2010, a man armed with a meat cleaver entered a central China kindergarten classroom and slaughtered seven children, a teacher and her mother before taking his own life. Seventeen people died and about 100 were wounded in five attacks in Chinese schools in a two-month period

2011, a German court sentenced John Demjanjuk, 91, to five years in prison for his role in killing 28,060 Jews as a World War II Nazi concentration camp guard in Poland. Demjanjuk, a Ukrainian who worked for decades in a U.S. auto plant, died the following year

2016, a divided U.S. Supreme Court blocked the execution of an Alabama inmate so that a lower court could review claims that strokes and dementia had rendered him incompetent to understand his looming death sentence. (A federal appeals court ruled in March 2017 that Vernon Madison was incompetent, and could not be executed.) ALSO: Susannah Mushatt Jones, recognized at the time as the world's oldest person, died in New York at age 116
