• 1912, the International Opium Convention is signed at The Hague

• 1922, at Toronto General Hospital, 14-year-old Canadian Leonard Thompson became the first person to receive an insulin injection as treatment for diabetes

• 2010, China accused U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of hurting diplomatic relations by criticizing the Chinese for Internet censorship

• 2012, the European Union agreed to ban oil imports from Iran, increasing pressure on the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program. Under the sanctions, the 27 members agreed not to sign new oil contracts with Iran and to sever existing contracts by July 1

• 2014, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ordered immediate actions to define the depth of trouble inside the nation's nuclear force, which had been rocked by disclosures about security lapses, poor discipline, weak morale and other problems

• 2016, a blizzard with hurricane-force winds brought much of the East Coast to a standstill, dumping as much as 3 feet of snow, stranding tens of thousands of travelers and shutting down Washington, D.C. and New York City

• 2018, an early-morning shooting at a high school in Benton, Kentucky, left two 15-year-old students dead and more than a dozen others injured; authorities charged a 15-year-old classmate with murder and assault. LeBron James, at 33, became the youngest player in NBA history with 30,000 career points, reaching that mark during the Cleveland Cavaliers' 114-102 loss to the San Antonio Spurs; he was the seventh player to score that many points in his career.
