• 1556, the deadliest earthquake in history, the Shaanxi earthquake, hits Shaanxi province, China. The death toll may have been as high as 830,000

• 1570, James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray, regent for the infant King James VI of Scotland, is assassinated by firearm, the first recorded instance of such

• 1571, the Royal Exchange opens in London

• 1793, the Second Partition of Poland: Russia and Prussia partition Poland for the second time

• 1845, Congress decided all national elections would be held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November

• 1897, Elva Zona Heaster is found dead in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. The resulting murder trial of her husband is perhaps the only case in United States history where the alleged testimony of a ghost helped secure a conviction

• 1912, the International Opium Convention is signed at The Hague

• 1922, at Toronto General Hospital, 14-year-old Canadian Leonard Thompson became the first person to receive an insulin injection as treatment for diabetes

• 1941, Charles Lindbergh testifies before the U.S. Congress and recommends that the United States negotiate a neutrality pact with Adolf Hitler, ym"sh

• 1943, during World War II: Australian and American forces finally defeat the Japanese army in Papua. This turning point in the Pacific War marks the beginning of the end of Japanese aggression

• 1950, Israel's parliment, the Knesset, passes a resolution that states Jerusalem is the capital of Israel

• 1957, American inventor Walter Frederick Morrison sells the rights to his flying disc to the Wham-O toy company, who later rename it the "Frisbee"

• 1964, the 24th Amendment to the United States Constitution, prohibiting the use of poll taxes in national elections, is ratified

• 1968, the USS Pueblo was seized in the Sea of Japan by North Korea, which claimed the ship was on a spy mission. The crew was held for 11 months before being released

• 1971, the temperature at Prospect Creek, Alaska, dropped to 80 degrees below zero, the lowest temperature recorded in the United States

• 1973, President Richard Nixon announces that a peace accord has been reached in Vietnam

• 1980, U.S. President Jimmy Carter reinstated the Selective Service System

• 1986, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducts its first members: Little Richard, Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley

• 1991, U.S. Army Gen. Colin Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said heavy bombing had destroyed Iraq's two operating nuclear reactors and damaged chemical facilities

• 2002, "American Taliban" John Walker Lindh returns to the United States in FBI custody. ALSO: Reporter Daniel Pearl is kidnapped in Karachi, Pakistan and subsequently murdered

• 2007, a new rule requiring U.S. airline passengers to show a passport upon their return from Mexico, Canada or the Caribbean took effect

• 2009, U.S. President Barack Obama ordered an end to the "global gag rule" that barred U.S. aid to groups overseas that provide abortions or abortion referrals

• 2010, China accused U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of hurting diplomatic relations by criticizing the Chinese for Internet censorship

• 2012, the European Union agreed to ban oil imports from Iran, increasing pressure on the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program. Under the sanctions, the 27 members agreed not to sign new oil contracts with Iran and to sever existing contracts by July 1

• 2014, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ordered immediate actions to define the depth of trouble inside the nation's nuclear force, which had been rocked by disclosures about security lapses, poor discipline, weak morale and other problems

• 2016, a blizzard with hurricane-force winds brought much of the East Coast to a standstill, dumping as much as 3 feet of snow, stranding tens of thousands of travelers and shutting down Washington, D.C. and New York City

• 2018, an early-morning shooting at a high school in Benton, Kentucky, left two 15-year-old students dead and more than a dozen others injured; authorities charged a 15-year-old classmate with murder and assault. LeBron James, at 33, became the youngest player in NBA history with 30,000 career points, reaching that mark during the Cleveland Cavaliers' 114-102 loss to the San Antonio Spurs; he was the seventh player to score that many points in his career.
