• 1639, the "Fundamental Orders", the first written constitution that created a government, is adopted in Connecticut

• 1784, during the American Revolutionary War: The United States ratifies a peace treaty with England

• 1832, American author Edgar Allan Poe publishes his first short story, "Metzengerstein"

• 1858, Napoleon III of France escapes an assassination attempt

• 1943, Franklin D. Roosevelt becomes the first President of the United States to travel via airplane while in office when he travels to meet Winston Churchill at the Casablanca Conference to discuss strategy and study the next phase of the war

• 1950, the first prototype of the MiG-17 makes its maiden flight

• 1951, the National Football League has its first Pro Bowl Game (Los Angeles, California)

• 1967, the Human Be-In, takes place in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, launching the Summer of Love. Between 20,000 to 30,000 people attend

• 1973, Super Bowl VII: The Miami Dolphins defeat the Washington Redskins. The Dolphins become the first NFL team to go undefeated in a season

• 1975, teenage heiress Lesley Whittle is kidnapped by Donald Neilson, aka "the Black Panther"

• 1994, U.S. President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris Yeltsin sign the Kremlin accords

• 1989, President Ronald Reagan delivered his 331st and final weekly White House radio address, telling listeners, "Believe me, Saturdays will never seem the same. I'll miss you."

• 1998, Whitewater prosecutors questioned Hillary Rodham Clinton at the White House for 10 minutes about the gathering of FBI background files on past Republican political appointees

• 1999, before a jury of 100 silent senators, House prosecutors demanded President Bill Clinton's removal from office, charging he had "piled perjury upon perjury" and obstructed justice

• 2000, the Dow Jones Industrial Average reaches a record high of 11,722.98. ALSO: In a massive demonstration demanding the return of Elian Gonzalez, tens of thousands of Cuban women marched to the U.S. mission in Havana

• 2003, Kmart Corp. announced its biggest round of cutbacks yet, saying it would close 326 more stores and eliminate 37,000 more jobs in hopes of getting out of bankruptcy by the end of April 2003. (Kmart emerged from Chapter 11 protection in May 2003.)

• 2004, the national flag of Georgia, the so-called "five cross flag", was restored to official use after a hiatus of some 500 years. ALSO: Former Enron finance chief Andrew Fastow pleaded guilty to conspiracy as he accepted a 10-year prison sentence. AND: A female practitioner of that "religion of peace" blew herself up at a Gaza crossing, killing three Israeli soldiers and a private security guard

• 2008, Republican Bobby Jindal, the first elected Indian-American governor in the United States, took office in Louisiana

• 2012, rescue workers scrambled aboard the stricken Costa Concordia cruise liner, seeking to help some 4,200 passengers the day after the ship ran aground and tipped over off Italy's Tuscan coast; the death toll from the tragedy eventually reached 32

• 2013, sporadic violence flared across much of Egypt as a two-day referendum on a new constitution began

• 2018, authorities east of Los Angeles arrested the parents of 13 siblings after being led to the home by one of them, a 17-year-old girl who had jumped out of a window and called 911; they said they found the girl's 12 brothers and sisters locked up in filthy conditions, with some malnourished and chained to beds. (A September, 2019 trial date has been set for David and Louise Turpin.) ALSO: On the defensive in the wake of disparaging comments about Haiti and African nations, President Donald Trump told reporters, "I am the least racist person you have ever interviewed."
