On this day in . . .


1609, the English ship Sea Venture, commanded by Admiral Sir George Somers, ran ashore on Bermuda after nearly foundering at sea during a storm. The 140 or so passengers and crew, originally bound for the Jamestown settlement in Virginia, founded a colony on the island

1864, during the Civil War: Battle of Ezra Church: Confederate troops make a third unsuccessful attempt to drive Union forces from Atlanta, Georgia

1932, President Herbert Hoover orders the United States Army to forcibly evict the "Bonus Army" of World War I veterans gathered in Washington, D.C.

1942, during World War II: Soviet leader Joseph Stalin issues Order No. 227 in response to alarming German advances into the Soviet Union. Under the order all those who retreat or otherwise leave their positions without orders to do so will be immediately execute

1943, during World War II: Operation Gomorrah: The British bomb Hamburg causing a firestorm that kills 42,000 German civilians

1945, a U.S. Army B-25 bomber crashes into the 79th floor of the Empire State Building killing 14 and injuring 26. ALSO: The U.S. Senate ratified the United Nations Charter by a vote of 89-2

1965, during Vietnam War: U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson announces his order to increase the number of United States troops in South Vietnam from 75,000 to 125,000

1976, the Tangshan earthquake measuring between 7.8 and 8.2 moment magnitude flattens Tangshan, the People's Republic of China, killing 242,769 and injuring 164,851

1998, Surgeon General David Satcher declared suicide a serious national threat, saying, "People should not be afraid or ashamed to seek help." ALSO: In return for immunity, former White House intern Monica Lewinsky agreed to testify before a federal grand jury investigating a possible relationship between her and U.S. President Bill Clinton

2000, Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was sworn in for an unprecedented third term of office, infuriating demonstrators who set government buildings ablaze.

2002, 9 coal miners trapped in the flooded Quecreek Mine in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, are rescued after 77 hours underground

2003, J.P. Morgan Chase and Citigroup, the two largest U.S. banks, agreed to pay nearly $300 million in fines and penalties to settle charges they had aided Enron in deceiving investors

2005, the Irish Republican Army renounced the use of violence against British rule in Northern Ireland and said it would disarm

2006, a gunman -- a practitioner of that "religion of peace" -- walked into the offices of the Jewish Federation of Greater Seattle and opened fire, killing one woman and wounding five others before he was arrested. (Naveed Haq was later convicted of aggravated first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without possibility of release.)

2014, a California Judge gave Shelly Sterling approval to sell the LA Clippers for $2 billion over the objections of her estranged husband, Donald, longtime owner of the NBA team who was banned from the league. Former Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer bought team for that amount

2016, Hillary Clinton accepted the Democratic presidential nomination at the party's convention in Philadelphia, where she cast herself as a unifier for divided times as well as an experienced leader steeled for a volatile world while aggressively challenging Republican Donald Trump's ability to do the same
