On this day in . . .

• 1493, Christopher Columbus leaves the New World, ending his first journey

• 1717, the Netherlands, England, and France sign the Triple Alliance against Spain, attempting to maintain the agreement of the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht. The three states were concerned about Spain becoming a superpower in Europe. As a result of this militarisation took place, causing great havoc to civilians. This enraged Spain and other states, leading to brinkmanship. It became the Quadruple Alliance the next year with the accession of Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI

• 1762, England declares war on Spain and Naples

• 1847, Samuel Colt sells his first revolver pistol to the United States government

• 1865, the New York Stock Exchange opens its first permanent headquarters at 10-12 Broad near Wall Street in New York City

• 1885, Dr. William Grant of Davenport, Iowa, performed the first successful appendectomy

• 1893, U.S. President Benjamin Harrison granted amnesty to all people who had abstained from practicing polygamy since Nov. 1, 1890. It was part of a deal for Utah to achieve statehood

• 1936, Billboard magazine publishes its first pop music charts

• 1943, Soviet dictator Josef Stalin appeared on the cover of Time as the magazine's 1942 "Man of the Year"

• 1944, Operation Carpetbagger, involving the dropping of arms and supplies to resistance fighters in Europe, begins

• 1951, Chinese and North Korean forces captured the South Korean capital of Seoul

• 1962, New York City introduces a train that operates without a crew on-board

• 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaims his "Great Society" during his State of the Union address

• 1974, President Richard Nixon refuses to hand over materials subpoenaed by the Senate Watergate Committee

• 1985, Israel confirmed that 10,000 Ethiopian Jews had been flown to Israel. Ethiopia termed the operation "a gross interference" in its affairs

• 1995, the 104th Congress convened, the first entirely under Republican control since the Eisenhower era

• 2004, Spirit, a NASA Mars Rover, lands successfully on Mars at 04:35 UTC

• 2006, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon suffered a significant stroke; his official powers were transferred to his deputy, Ehud Olmert. (Sharon remained in a coma until his death in Jan. 2014.)

• 2007, the 110th United States Congress convenes, electing Nancy Pelosi as the first female Speaker of the House in U.S. history

• 2010, thousands of people attended the opening of the Burj Khalifa (Burj Dubai Tower), the world's tallest building, in the United Arab Emirates. At 2,717 feet, it's more than twice as tall as New York City's Empire State Building

• 2014, the Tennessee Titans fired Coach Mike Munchak, ending his 31-year career as a player (member of the Hall of Fame and nine-time Pro Bowler) and coach with the franchise.

• 2016, workers returned to their offices at the San Bernardino, California campus where 14 people were killed the previous month by practitioners of that "religion of peace" -- husband and wife -- in a terror attack. ALSO: The Justice Department sued Volkswagen over emissions-cheating software found in nearly 600,000 vehicles sold in the United States

• 2018, the Trump administration moved to vastly expand offshore drilling from the Atlantic to the Arctic oceans with a five-year plan that would open up federal waters off of California for the first time in decades and possibly open new areas of oil and gas exploration along the East Coast. ALSO: A powerful winter storm meteorologists described as a "bomb cyclone" caused the Atlantic Ocean to breach the seawall in Massachusetts, causing tidal flooding and forcing residents to evacuate. AND: The Dow Jones Industrial Average burst through the 25,000 mark, closing at 25,075.13 just five weeks after its first close above 24,000
