Editors reveal their true colors

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | The magazine endorsements are in, and Britney Spears could have predicted them all.

The New Yorker is for Kerry. So is The Nation and The New Republic and Jann Wenner of Rolling Stone. The conservatives at the Weekly Standard and National Review are for Bush. Reason's libertarians want both to lose.

The American Conservative, Pat Buchanan's print weapon of choice, splits its vote six ways, letting writers endorse Bush, Kerry, Ralph Nader, Michael Peroutka of the Constitution Party, Michael Badnarik of the Libertarian Party and "not voting," the option half the country has picked since 1932.

Maxim's sexually disordered editors, as you might guess, don't care who wins or loses as long as they can make lewd jokes about the winner.

Its November sop to politics is "Electoral Dysfunction," which asks serious questions about politics to celebrity smart-alecks such as Dennis Miller, Penn Jillette and Lewis Black.

Not surprisingly, their answers are 90 percent wacked.

Miller, the un-closeted right-wing Castle Shannon Point Park College grad, is solidly pro-Bush. Everyone else prefers candidates who don't exist or aren't running.

More serious voters can find clues to how things might go Tuesday by looking at the voting statistics from 2000's electoral follies, found in the back of American Enterprise magazine's October/November issue.

In 2000, women — who make up 52 percent of voters — went for Gore over Bush, 54 percent to 42 percent, while Bush won the manly vote, 53-43. Don't ask what gender the missing 4 percent were.

Bush won the married bloc, 53 percent to 38 percent, the white vote, 54-42, and cleaned up in the sticks, 59-37. Gore virtually monopolized smaller chunks of voters such as blacks, 90-8, and the big-city vote, 71-26, and almost broke even with Bush in the 'burbs, where 43 percent of voters dwell.

Turnout is always the great unknown. But experts are predicting Bush might double his black total this time and attract more women voters, because they're terrified of either terrorism or one of the Kerrys.

Meanwhile, it's a statistical tie. If it stays as close as the pollsters and pundits think it will — which probably means Bush will win handily, 51 percent to 46 percent — it should scare everyone that the future of our republic will be decided four days hence by the Procrastinator Vote.

They are the 5 percent of voters who since 1960 have not decided whom they will vote for until Election Day. Whomever these indifferent, inattentive or just plain ignorant citizens choose — unless you want to watch lawyers on TV all winter — pray they produce a landslide.
