Lieberman won't promote gay marriage on Sabbath
http://www.jewishworldreview.com |
U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-CT, said today that although he'll push a Senate bill that grants marriage benefits to gays and unmarried heterosexuals, he won't do so on the Sabbath.
Sen. Lieberman, a Democrat candidate for President, observes the Sabbath as a day of rest due to the Biblical command "For six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, a holy convocation. You shall not do any work; it is a sabbath to the L-rd in all your dwellings." [Leviticus 23:3]
The Senator believes the commands about the Sabbath are to be heeded literally, and his principled stand has earned him the respect of religous people.
The book of Leviticus also contains the following passage: "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act."
However, a spokesman for the Senator said that passage doesn't literally mean that homosexual union is wrong, and "G-d expects us to decide which commands are important to us."
