When Network Lies Kill

Since I haven't watched network news in decades, the saga about Brian Williams' Major Hoople persona is more about drama than anything substantive to my interest. Whether Williams is a fabulist, an incestuous voyeur who bragged about his daughter's soft porn role on HBO's 'Girls' or simply your average liberal is less compelling to me than wondering if a more dangerous anchor will ever be exposed for his lies.

Unfortunately, Walter Cronkite is still revered as the most trusted man in America even though his lies about the Vietnam War caused countless military deaths by prolonging the conflict.

During Fox's 5 TV program, I watched in frustration as Bob Beckel, the token liberal on the conservative panel, discussed the Brian Williams fiasco bemoaning the fact that network news anchors had fallen so far from respected anchors like Walter Chronkite who reported the "truth".

It's easy to understand how Cronkite ascended to such a lofty level of respect. During the most tumultuous event in recent history, the assassination of our youthful president, Cronkite was the one who reported that tragedy to the nation. I remember watching him say those awful words, "The president has been shot," and then confirming his death, with his eyes swimming near tears and his voice cracking. He felt our pain and he owned the nation after that.

He was there when Neil Armstrong stepped on the Moon and every major news story thereafter but it wasn't until the Vietnam War that Cronkite revealed his true leftwing anti-war agenda and he did it by lying.

Reporting on the Tet offensive which claimed heavy military casualties, Cronkite reported the massive attack on South Vietnam as a loss for the U.S. The Vietnam War was a quagmire and intimated that the war was lost militarily. In actuality, the Viet Cong loss was devastating and when U.S. Marines crushed the last North Vietnamese pockets of resistance in the northern city of Hue, the VC had lost 80,000-100,000 killed or wounded without capturing a single province. The Tet offensive was a last gasp for the Communists and the U.S. had won every single battle.

According to one former North Vietnamese leader, Bui Tin, collapse of our political will was "essential to our strategy." The war could not be won militarily but it could be won at home with the help of anti-war activists and a hostile media In an interview with the Wall Street Journal after his retirement, he said that visits from such anti-war advocates as Jane Fonda and Ramsey Clark "gave us confidence that we should hold on in the face of battlefield reverses." In an interview with WSJ, he said "We were elated when Jane Fonda, wearing a red Vietnamese dress, said at a press conference that she was ashamed of American actions in the war and that she would struggle along with us." Ah, that's 'Hanoi Jane' who made a fortune from exercise videos from women who still don't know or care about her treason.

The Tet offensive is considered by many to be the turning point of the war. Why? ; Because Walter Cronkite returned from Vietnam and reported to the nation that the war was a losing cause. It was a lie but he knew how much influence he had and along with other treasonous Americans like Fonda and Clark, realized that the war could be won here. When LBJ said he could not continue the war because, "He'd lost Cronkite," the end was near and he refused to run for reelection.

Cronkite tried to manipulate the nation again during the Iraq War but by then he was afflicted with the BDS-Bush Derangement Syndrome- and loathed everything about President Bush. In 2004, in an interview with CNN's Larry King, he said, "In fact, I'm a little inclined to think that Karl Rove, the political manager at the White House, who is a very clever man, he probably set up bin Laden to this thing." Pure liberal madness and this time the voters knew it.

If this Brian Willams kerfuffle can wake the nation up to the fact that the mainstream media is untrustworthy and has been for some time, then that's a wonderful thing and something to celebrate. But lest we get too comfortable, come 2016 and the election of a new president, the biggest threat to a legitimate election is a Machiavellian mainstream media. Is it really a coincidence the Jon Stewart is leaving his popular Daily Show? Is he being groomed to replace Williams at NBC?

That's unbelievable or is it? In this age of Gruber idiots and low info voters, nothing is beyond the pale and if that's the joke, it's not funny at all.
