Learning about our own reactions to stress and trauma and the responses of our friends and neighbors is a collective responsibility. We should not become irritated and frustrated with them because they have mood swings or are withdrawn. In this age of national vulnerability becoming knowledgeable and aware of the symptoms that trauma can produce is no longer the sole jurisdiction of mental health professionals. Understanding and empathy have become a national imperative.
