herzliya diarist ![]() Teens will be teens, whether in America or in Israel --- and in the summer, that means hanging out at the mall. But in Israel proper, waiting in line is enough of a crime in the eyes of "courageous" Arab idealists, to leave you dead. There's good reason why our man in the Holy Land will never have his byline in the NY Times. He tells the story behind the story.
yiddishe kups ![]() Friends and relatives of those who have experienced a personal trauma might become angry or impatient with them. They might say: "Why can't you just snap out of it an get on with your life?" This reaction would show a lack of understanding and empathy for the person experiencing Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Yes, it IS a real condition. Learning about our own reactions to stress and trauma and the responses of our friends and neighbors is a collective responsibility. We should not become irritated and frustrated with them because they have mood swings or are withdrawn. In this age of national vulnerability becoming knowledgeable and aware of the symptoms that trauma can produce is no longer the sole jurisdiction of mental health professionals. Understanding and empathy have become a national imperative.
