50 questions you should ask your kids on a regular basis

I remember coming home from elementary school and having the same conversation every day. My mom would ask how my day was, I would say "good" and she would always keep asking questions because my answer wasn't quite enough information for her.

I'm sure this happens to almost every mom, and some moms have a really hard time getting their kids to open up to them. They feel like they're not connecting with their kids, and that can be a scary feeling.

You want your kids to talk to you and open up, and it's easier said than done. But it doesn't have to be such a daunting task. Here are 50 questions you should ask your child to get to know them better:

1. What was the best/worst part of your day?

2. What did you do at recess?

3. What was your favorite thing you learned today?

4. When do you feel the most happy/sad?

5. What are you really good at?

6. How would you describe yourself in three words?

7. Who is your favorite superhero?

8. Who is your very best friend?

9. What's your favorite song?

10. What would you do if you were invisible for a day?

11. What would your superpower be?

12. If you have a baby someday, what will you name him or her?

13. Do you remember any of your dreams? What are they?

14. What scares you?

15. Where do you feel most safe?

16. What are you thinking about right now?

17. What book have you read lately?

18. Who is your favorite Disney character?

19. Do you think school is important? Why or why not? (If they say no, take this as a teaching moment to help them understand the value of education.)

20. What can you do to help someone tomorrow?

21. What can I do to make your day better today?

22. Did anything confuse you today? How did you think through it?

23. What are you looking forward to?

24. What are you not too excited for?

25. Do you like your classmates and teacher?

26. What's your favorite thing to learn about?

27. Do you want to get married someday? Why or why not?

28. What do you want to be when you grow up?

29. If you could choose your own name, what would you choose?

30. What's your favorite song?

31. Should you always tell the truth, even if it hurts someone?

32. If you could go anywhere in the whole world, where would you go?

33. Why do you think some people do good things and some people do bad things?

34. What's one thing you wish you were perfect at?

35. What would you buy if you had a million dollars?

36. What do you think love is?

37. Do you think you're a good friend?

38. What makes someone a good friend?

39. What's your favorite joke?

40. What do you like most about mom/dad?

41. Do you love your life?

42. What's the best part about being the youngest/middle/oldest child?

43. What's the worst part about being the youngest/middle/oldest child?

44. What's your favorite movie?

45. If you could speak any language, what would you speak?

46. What's your favorite thing to do as a family?

47. How often do you pray?

48. If you had one wish, what would it be?

49. Who are you excited to see at school every day?

50. Do you know how much mom and dad love you?

Keeping open communication with your kids doesn't have to be hard. When you ask these questions, it opens up the conversation and sparks ideas in your child's mind. Plus, it gives you an opportunity to teach about important values and life skills that might be overlooked otherwise.
