To look away from the world, or to stare at it, does not help a man to reach God; but he who sees the world in Him stands in His presence.
— Martin Buber

"TALK ABOUT SOMEBODY WHO 'GETS IT' "

[Today's issue is below. PLEASE read what follows til the end. It's short.]

I've been reading JWR for nearly 15 years, having started after seeing a profile of Binyamin Jolkovsky in The Wall Street Journal.

The WSJ article appeared in the paper's religion column. As a pastor, I was intrigued. All these years later, I still am.

I live in the South. There are very few Orthodox Jews here.

I once wrote Binyamin and asked him why a publication with the word "Jewish" in its name publishes so many articles on Christians and Christianity. (There have been two articles in the last week alone.)

I've written many letters to publications over the years. Almost always my notes are ignored. Binyamin, however, responded in minutes.

You could hear the compassion in his wise and informed reply.

Christians and their values, he explained to me, are under attack worldwide and this needs attention. While virtually every faith community and minority enjoys special protections in America, for Christians it seems to be open season. Now there are, obviously, differences between Christianity and Judaism. However, our respective faiths' values, he argues, are similar. Christianity is, after all, rooted in Judaism.

Talk about somebody who "gets it".

I find enlightenment in JWR's articles on biblical and moral themes and even pass some out at Bible study. If I were a betting man, I'd wager there are many like me who do.

I'm particularly touched that Binyamin prepares extra issues for his non-Jewish readers when he suspends publication during Jewish holy days.

People who not only profess a love of God but who serve Him and His adherents deserve support.
