We expect more from technology and less from each other. We create technology to provide the illusion of companionship without the demands of friendship.

READER RESPONSE

I doubt that you remember me.

Several years back, as a college student, I sent you a donation. Your online form has a slot for comments. With my donation I added that while it may not be much when compared with some (many?) of your older, more successful readers, given my situation, the amount was huge.

I thanked you for JWR, which kept me informed and stimulated me to be a better, more refined and responsible person.

I thought nothing of the comments until I received a note back from you. It said that you had credited my account. You asked that I take the well intended donation and spend it on myself or somebody I love.

I saved your note. You wrote: "There's no doubt that a person of your caliber will be successful. One day soon you will be able to express your gratitude more easily. When that day comes, please donate again."

"Easily" is a double-edged sword. It's also easy to take resources for granted.

It's been a few years since I graduated. I have a decent job. After reading your note today about how few have responded so far to your appeal I've decided that now is finally the time to donate again.

To me, JWR is as essential as my cellphone. I spend money on it, eating out and periodically go to movies and buy coffee on the run. I imagine most JWR readers do. Yet so few folks who spend money on those must-haves have yet to respond to your fundraising effort. Now, that is just wrong!

Friends, if you are gaining from JWR -- and you most definitely are -- please help.

I should have donated earlier. I am now. So should you.

R.S.,
Galva, IL
