Jewish World Review Dec. 15, 2010/ 8 Teves, 5771 The President Who Wasn't There By Arnold Ahlert http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | In the 1972 film, "The Candidate" Robert Redford plays a Democratic contender for the U.S. Senate who, despite having no ostensible chance to beat the heavily-favored Republican, wins the election. The film itself is so-so, but the last line is quite telling. Redford, having just pulled out a victory for which he was totally unprepared turns to his campaign manager and utters the following: "Marvin … What do we do now?" At that point the throng leads Redford away and we never get an answer to the question. Perhaps I'm being cynical, but I sometimes wonder if our current president has been asking himself some version the same question for last two years. There have been many odd moments in the course of many presidential careers. But few would measure up to the scene last week where the leader of the free world ceded the stage to a former leader of the free world who was more than willing to step into the breach. That Bill Clinton is a ham more than willing to occupy the spotlight is about as surprising as a sunrise. That Barack Obama was more than willing to let him do it is bad enough. But couldn't he have at least said the reason he was leaving was that he had "other important matters to address" or something along those lines? Does he not realize what announcing he's leaving because he's late for first lady Michelle's Christmas party makes him look like? Or worse, is it possible he doesn't care? The bet here is the answer is "yes" to both questions. In modern times, we've had all sorts of presidents, coming from all over the ideological map. We've had those with both engaging and subdued styles of leadership, those with varying levels of charisma (or lack thereof), some smarter than others, etc., etc. But I can't recall a single one of them who seemed like he wanted the job of being president less than Barack Obama. And I'm not talking about what many of the armchair analysts call his "detached" or "professorial" style, which is really a nicer way of saying, to use the popular vernacular, "he's not that into us." I mean the job itself. One often gets the impression Mr. Obama would rather be doing just about anything else other than governing, even if it costs him twelve stitches in his lip. Were this a new development, some Americans might be forgiven for being surprised. But this was a man with a track record for voting "present" as a state senator in Illinois, in order to avoid taking controversial positions on various issues. But even present was a step up from his willingness to be absent last week, when he apparently decided to allow Bill Clinton to continue a press conference without him. I'd bet dollars to doughnuts there were more than a few Americans who wished Obama's exit was more than symbolic. The bet here is a lot of Americans saw an "amateur" leaving the stage even as a "professional" took over. Yet like it or not--and that goes for both Americans and the president--there are at least two more years to go for this administration. And while the urge to enjoy Barack Obama's stunning and rapid fall from grace is tempting, such schadenfreude may exact a far steeper price from Americans than the president himself. The ship of state, irrespective of ideological differences, cannot be a rudderless vehicle. Perhaps domestically we can muddle through two years of a slacker president whose ability to lead is directly affected by the nearness of his teleprompter. (Ironically, Mr Obama's dealing with a majority of House Republicans which will doubtless engender many vetoes on his part, might actually earn him the title "The President of No." But as I've said before, the most likely outcome of the last election will be stopping the progressive dismantling of this country, not undoing it). It is foreign policy where Mr. Obama is capable of doing the most damage. If leaders in places like North Korea, Iran and China, i.e., didn't see Mr. Obama's step off when it actually happened, they have surely seen it by now. What did they see? Whatever they make of such a performance, one can be sure that none of it will accrue to America's interest. How can the president be so oblivious to what seems like such obvious symbolism? No doubt a certain amount of self-involvement is a character trait shared by most people who rise to prominence on the world stage. Even those as seemingly selfless as Mahatma Ghandi and Mother Teresa had to have the kind of big egos that allowed them to do big things. But if one had a nickel for every utterance of the word "I" by this president, we would be well on our way to retiring the national debt. The potentially fatal flaw of such narcissism is the assumption that, when dealing with other leaders of the world, they consider him as brilliant as he considers himself. One has to wonder what this president would give a way in exchange for a flattering comment by the likes of a Vladimir Putin or a Mahmoud Abbas. One can only wonder what a man who sees the world through a progressive, rose-colored lens might do to "burnish his historical legacy" in the next two years--or the next six. Maybe I'm making more out of this incident than I should. But I've learned to trust my gut about people, and when I saw Mr. Obama check out of his own press conference, my gut said one thing: here's a man in over his head. What does "in over his head" mean? The nation is going to spend the next two years (at least) finding out. For the country's sake, I hope my gut has betrayed me for once. If not the question asked by Robert Redford's movie character looms large. America … What do we do now?
