The shortest exercise in direct democracy came and went in the blink of an eye. Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou offered and rescinded a referendum to the Greek people to vote directly on whether or not they want to run out of other peoples' money to spend. Apparently European officials determined to continue propping up the fatally flawed construct known as the European Union — an oxymoron if ever there was one — made George an offer he couldn't refuse. Thus the slow motion death dance continues.
Why is Greece in the dumper? In one corner we have the Greek people who apparently believe such mundane considerations as working and paying taxes is for chumps. I'd like to say this is new news, but this particular national character flaw was well known long before the Greeks were invited to jump on board the EU socialist gravy train. In fact it took Enron-like bookkeeping to fudge the numbers enough so that they could qualify to join the EU in the first place.
In the other corner we have the New World Order, transnational elitists who have managed to convince a substantial portion of the world that snappy clothes and an imperious air born of little more than self-aggrandizing hubris is a viable substitute for intelligence and honesty. It had to be hubris which convinced this bunch that nose-to-the-grindstone Germans could be equal economic partners with the opa and ouzo set. The NWO bunch was more than willing to underwrite, not the Greeks per se, but their own grandiose schemes of a united and all-powerful Europe punching its way to the economic heavyweight title of the world. It looked so good on paper, what could possibly go wrong?
The dirtiest little secret of all? Nothing went wrong.
Greeks behaved like Greeks, Germans behaved like Germans and transnational elitists behaved like transnational elitists. Greeks spent more than they could possibly produce, Germans did the opposite, and elitists moved billions of dollars around papering over the cultural and economic differences, even as they lectured the world — and most especially the United States — about the inarguable superiority of cradle-to-grave socialism. Every now and then, one or two elitists threw us a sop, noting that the underwriting of socialist utopias is made considerably easier when less enlightened Americans are covering the collective behinds of the EU on the military front. But isn't that precisely what less enlightened friends are for?

Now that the whole experiment is blowing up in their faces the ugly side of socialism is revealing itself. The Greeks can't wrap their heads around the idea that the gravy train has permanently derailed, the Germans can't wrap their heads around the idea that the Greeks are ungrateful bastards, and the transnational elitists are flushing billions of additional Euros down the drain because they can't wrap their heads around the idea that their multi-culti, NWO could bankrupt the entire continent.
Wanna guess who their new best friend is? "We need the leadership of Barack Obama," said French president Nicolas Sarkozy, when the meeting of the G-20 nations convened in Cannes last Thursday. And what did Mr. Obama say? Something to warm the cockles of every OWSers heart. "We spent most of our conversation focused on strengthening the global economic recovery so we're creating jobs for our people and stabilizing the financial markets around the world," said Mr. Obama. Our people? I guess we're all Greeks now.
The jobs part, in case you haven't figured it out, is the proverbial boob bait for the masses. The second half of the sentence is the money shot, so to speak. That's the part which translates into another multi-billion dollar bank bailout for the transnational set.
Take that, Zuccotti-heads!
You know the real trouble with socialism? There are no good guys. You're either on one end of the equation sucking up whatever you didn't earn and telling yourself you're entitled to it, or you're on the other end trying to prove you're smarter and more beneficent than everyone else, when you don't have a clue. You're either the drug addict or the drug dealer.
You know what the European Union really is? It's the Soviet Union with better PR.
