1835, the first battle of the Texas Revolution took place as American settlers defeated a Mexican cavalry near the Guadalupe River

1851, the pasilalinic-sympathetic compass, built to prove the belief that snails create a permanent telepathic link when they touch, is demonstrated but proves to be a fake

2005, NFL plays first regular season game outside United States when the Arizona Cardinals defeat the San Francisco 49ers 31-14 in Mexico City

2006, an armed milk truck driver took a group of girls hostage in an Amish schoolhouse in Nickel Mines, Pa., killing five of the girls and wounding five others before committing suicide

2008, more than a year after millionaire adventure Steve Fossett vanished on a solo flight over California's rugged Sierra Nevada, searchers found the wreckage of his plane but no body inside. (Fossett's remains were discovered in late October 2008.)

2012, Pennsylvanians can vote in November without having to show a photo identification card, a judge ruled in a challenge to the state's controversial voter ID law

2014, President Barack Obama acknowledged his pivotal role in the midterm political campaign, arguing in a speech at Northwestern University that the November congressional elections were a referendum on his economic policies and blaming Republicans for blocking his efforts to boost wages and create more jobs
