Jewish World Review Oct 11, 2012/ 25 Tishrei, 5773 The 'war' you don't hear about --- the one on average Americans By Jay Ambrose http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | Turn on the TV these days and you may catch a political ad worrying about "the Republican war on women," a campaign contrivance bringing to mind a 1938 radio broadcast narrated by actor-director Orson Welles. It was a play about a Martian attack. Thousands of listeners thought it was for real and panicked, just as some viewers apparently think Republicans really are out to get women. If the TV nonsense hasn't convinced them, maybe they'd buy the message in a political missive that arrived at my house from Planned Parenthood. "Can you believe your nation's leaders are still talking about whether birth control is acceptable?" asks Cecile Richards, the group's president and signer of the letter. The answer is no, I can't, because a tiny fraction of 1 percent of politicians on either side of the aisle has ever said anything remotely like that. Suggesting otherwise is prevarication testing its wings in outer space. None of that is to say, however, that there are no domestic wars on the American people, or, to bring the rhetoric down a couple of notches, that there are no public policies inflicting harm on not just women, but also men and children, especially the least advantaged and those in the middle class. What has happened in the Obama administration is egotism, amateurism, leftism and political tricks conspiring to spoil our best possibilities. Right now, we might be basking in renewed prosperity if it hadn't been for such fumbles as a stimulus yanking money out of the private economy and contributing to record-breaking trillion-dollar deficits. Some argue it will have lasting positive consequences, no matter how mountainous with pork or egregiously administered. Others eviscerate their arguments, observing, for instance, that certain parts of it could not have been the cause of certain economic advances, as these Keynesians insist, because the advances came first. The spiraling debt and the administration's refusal to address it seriously are what's scaring businesses out of expansionary visions while Obamacare's coming regulatory mishmash is making it an enormous risk to hire more people. All of this and more is a mighty drag making our economic recovery slower than any since World War II. Middle class families are down thousands in income. Some 23 million people are looking for work without success, have given up the hunt or have taken part-time jobs. Poverty has been increasing wildly. Recently, the official monthly unemployment rate did fall from 8.1 to 7.8 percent, but that is pretty much meaningless because the surveys can be off by hundreds of thousands of jobs and there's good reason to think old ways of calculating don't mesh with some of today's new realities. Most of the reported job gain, at any rate, was people giving up a search for full-time work to settle for part-time relief, hardly a sign of economic buoyancy that will soon have us all bright and merry. Part of the answer to our troubles could be the energy boom that's waiting to produce tens of thousands of new jobs if government will let it. But through excessive regulations, moratoriums and other means, it isn't. Nothing sums it up better than a presidential decision stopping the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to Texas. Three years of study attested to its safety, but radical environmentalists said none of this science counted, and when these crazies honk their horns, this administration hits the brakes. The Republican war on women? It is, as I suggested, a fictional equivalent of that old radio version of the H.G. Wells novel, "The War of the Worlds." The Obama policy calamity, on the other hand, is as real as your friends who are broke. You don't have to panic. You merely have to exercise your citizenship wisely.
