Perry Stands Firm. Obama Stands Mute

Often the character of a man is revealed by what he says — or doesn't say. In the first case, the chasm between ordinary Americans and the ruling class, coupled their media apparatchiks on both sides of the aisle, is tremendously revealing. In the second case, irony abounds: the most loquacious man on the planet has had nothing to say about two of the more pressing issues of the day. As luck would have it, both men are running for president.
First, what was said. Texas Governor Rick Perry apparently reaped the ruling class whirlwind for daring to suggest that Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke has been less than responsible with the nation's money supply. "If this guy prints more money between now and the election, I don't know what y'all will do to him in Iowa, but we would treat him pretty ugly down in Texas," Perry said referring to Bernanke. "Printing more money to play politics at this particular time in American history is almost treacherous, treasonous in my opinion," he added.
On the squishy right, Karl Rove was upset. "You don't accuse the chairman of the Federal Reserve of being a traitor to his country," he whined. The NY Post's John Podhoretz contended Perry "looked like kind of a jerk." On the left, NY Times correspondent Binyamin Appelbaum called it "horrifying" and Politico's Brent Budowsky predicted that Perry "will self-destruct within 30 days."
You know what else is being destroyed? The dollar itself — courtesy of Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke. The same Ben Bernanke who announced last week that interest rates would be kept at essentially zero until 2013. The same Ben Bernanke whose "quantitative easing" policy was another incarnation of the same Keynesian "stimulus" that has done exactly jack to get this country back on track.
For QE2, Ben increased the money supply by a cool $600 billion. For those who understand Economics 101, as in, when you make more of something, each piece of it is worth less, it is no secret that QE2 is one of the principal reasons the price of everything, but most especially food and fuel, went on a tear for the last year or so.

And if that doesn't get you upset, perhaps this will: according to Ben and Company, inflation is minimal. How it that possible? Because when the government calculates inflation, neither food nor fuel are factored into the equation. No big deal, right? You don't have to drive — or eat — as much as you used to.
You know what QE2 really does? Props up the stock market. Which is why, went it was tanking last week, there were "rumors" regarding QE3. The interest rate freeze figures into this scheme as well. What Ben is telling Americans, aside from the fact that he believes the economy is going to suck for at least two more years, is that if you want a reasonable return on your money, you can't get it in such things as CDs or saving accounts, or anything else where interest rates have been reduced to bupkis. So what's left if you're looking for a decent return on your money?
The stock market.
The political aspect? Without a decent stock market, the Obama administration, which can't point to a single other "green shoot" on the economic horizon, is done. Finito. And that would put Wall Street right back in the same soup Main Street has been in for three years. So the "party of the little people" is more than willing to screw those little people by reducing their buying power, and their savings power, while their standard-bearer has the unmitigated gall to blame it on Japanese tsunamis, the Arab Spring and European troubles "lapping at our shores." European troubles engendered by the exact same insanity of "fixing" debt with more debt, just like Ben Bernanke is doing to America.
And Rick Perry is a jerk? More like an American hero — as long as you're not one of the chosen few.
As for what hasn'tbeen said? By now, Americans who aren't comatose have noticed two developments that ought to merit a word or two from a president never at a loss for words. The first development is Syria. One of the most despicable men on the planet, Bashar Assad, along with his government loyalists, has made gunning down innocent Syrians in the streets a regular habit. So regular that we're over 2000 dead and counting. Perhaps my math is bad, but that seems to put him in reach of Moammar Qaddafi's current streak. The one which forced Mr. Obama to "lead from behind" in attempting to remove that madman from power in Libya. And while no one is advocating yet a fourth Middle East war, one might be inclined to think the leader of the (mostly) free world would at least call for Assad to step down.
So why hasn't Mr. Obama done so? The prevailing rationale is that the administration is worried that Islamists would fill the resultant power vacuum. Those would be the same Islamists angling for power in Egypt, where Mr. Obama and company were more than happy to throw Hosni Mubarak under the camel in a grand gesture to the so-called Arab Spring.
What's the difference between Mubarak and Assad? Mubarak's a former ally. Thus, former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger's words still resonate: the only thing worse than being America's enemy is being America's friend.
Development number two? Flash mobs. Overwhelmingly black-American flash mobs, wreaking havoc all over the country. A development seemingly tailor made for a president so quick to inject race into the equation as he did when fellow elitist, Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, was stopped by Cambridge Police Sgt. Joseph Crowley responding to a call about someone apparently trying to break into Gates' home. According to Mr. Obama — almost immediately after the incident occurred — the Cambridge police "acted stupidly." Black teens committing social media-organized mayhem, week in, week out, since the Memorial Day weekend?
Not a word from our "post-racial" president.
In 2012, it is possible the choice for president may come down to one of these two men. If that's how it plays out, is up to Americans to decide whose character is more suited to leading the nation. As I write this, there is a report in the Washington Post that core inflation is up the most in six months. Some economists — stop me if this sounds familiar — said such a rise is "unexpected."
Not for Rick Perry.
