Give Me a Flatscreen TV, or Give Me Anarchy!

By Arnold Ahlert

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | As luck would have it, I was asked to do a TV interview in London regarding a column I'd written comparing the riots there to flash mobs in Philadelphia and at the Wisconsin State Fair. While the interview went well, what I heard being broadcast on the show prior to it was depressing: a riot preparedness guide. As a resident of Florida, I am familiar with hurricane preparedness. Yet storms are an act of nature. There is nothing natural about hordes of British youth tearing up their own country, right?

The answer comes down to where one stands on the nature of the human condition. If one believes, as most progressives do, that men will always aspire to their higher angels if given enough government kindness to tide them over the rough patches, the violence in London requires one to assign blame to forces other than the rioters themselves. After all, if one lives in government-subsidized housing, eats government-subsided food, and gets a government-subsidized disposable income — all in preparation for the leap to self-sufficiency welfare-staters envision as the end result of such programs — the ingratitude demonstrated by the recipients of such "benevolence" becomes problematic.

Never let it be said that progressives are unpredictable. As the dawn follows night, leftists in Britain were quick to explain that the primary cause of the insurrection was the insufficiency of government-sponsored benevolence. Such people might be taken seriously if the rioters were intent on helping themselves to life's basic necessities. Perhaps among the terminally twisted tenets of progressive thinking, the wholesale looting of such items as flat screen TVs, booze and high-end training shoes qualify as necessities. And perhaps the muggings, the torching of businesses and police cars are considered a "reasonable payback" for the "stinginess" of the welfare state's underwriters and distributers.

For the rest of us? Not so much.

As it is with any system on the verge of collapse, decent people are beginning to understand that the welfare state's central premise is a lie: the overwhelming majority of those receiving government assistance are not "transitioning" towards a better life. Anything resembling quid pro quo has long been removed from the equation. Getting something for almost nothing, the lone exception being an unspoken requirement that one not bite that hand that feeds you, reveals what the welfare state has become: institutionally-sanctioned extortion paid by the givers to the takers — in exchange for societal peace.

The payoff is apparently insufficient. Using the killing of gang member Mark Duggan as the initial rationale, riots long removed from that rationale began in earnest. They then mushroomed beyond the boundaries of race and class from whence they began, to include many ethnicities and anecdotal numbers of well-to-do youth, caught up in the "excitement" of anarchy.

This last bit was of great relief to some on the left because it allowed for uncertainty as to where the "real" blame for the riots could be assigned. Thus it was no surprise to read an article in the Financial Times which described the "social diversity" that made it difficult to "decipher emotions." The author then attempted to split the ideological difference. "The only certainty was that politicians would credit the perpetrators with whatever agenda most conveniently suited their own ideological programmes — from the left's concerns about an economic underclass, to the right's focus on plain and simple criminality."

What a load. You want commonality? Try the wholesale amorality which proceeds directly from welfare state ideology. Begin with breakdown of the nuclear family as in Britain, which is about one year away from a nationwide illegitimate birthrate exceeding 50 percent. Toss in a school system where progressives have all but eliminated failure in order to preserve a child's self-esteem. Add the left's general contempt for religion which has resulted in the country virtually abandoning its Christian heritage, along with its moral center. Mix it all together with the aforementioned abandonment of anything resembling expectations in return for the subsidization of one's lifestyle, and what do you get? The perfect incubator for the thoughtless, selfish lout whose world moves from one moment of immediate self-gratification to the next, absent contemplation — or remorse.

And the best the left can come up with for denying that reality is that wholesale amorality has spread beyond the boundaries of class and race? Congratulations on your unrelenting myopia.

On Saturday, the Daily Mail had a story about the first family to be evicted from their government-subsidized housing as a result of the rioting. Daniel Sartain-Clarke, 18, along with his mother and sister, will be tossed from their two-bedroom $360,000 flat due to the fact that Daniel allegedly engaged in "violent disorder and attempting to steal electronic goods from the Currys store at Clapham Junction, South London, on Monday night." Naturally his mother, Maite de la Calva, 43, doesn't believe it. And despite the fact that housing rules stipulate one can be evicted if anyone living in the house is involved in criminality, she claimed "our human rights have been completely taken for granted," adding that she is "not responsible for my son's actions and they are penalising me for his actions."

Obviously it would do no good to point out to this woman that the only thing being taken for granted is her assumption that she's entitled to a $360,000 government-subsidized apartment. That is a "human right" completely untethered to anything resembling the genuine effort it would take to acquire that level of housing in a world where one would actually have to earn it. The father, or fathers involved in the equation, since Daniel's sister appears to a be completely different ethnicity than her brother? Nowhere to be found.

In America, it has long been the desire of progressives to be "more like Europe." They may be getting their wish. This is one American who believes that flash mobs are far more than anecdotal occurrences. They are becoming a fad, currently led by black youths who have been immersed in the cultural and economic grievances promoted by the left longer than other American ethnicities. One can "hardly wait" until the phenomenon becomes mainstream, or ends up in a Bernie Goetz-like incident where a store owner or victim blows the perpetrators away — after which the usual suspects will offer their usual wisdom about root causes and victimhood, along their usual attempt to reverse the role of victim and perpetrator.

Spare me. The current combination of technology and amorality adds up to one of the least resistant paths of least resistance that men invariably travel when absolutely nothing is expected of them. The real question surrounding the riots in Britain and the flash mobs in America isn't why. It's why not? The assumption that those who cater to the lowest common denominator get to define "lowest" is being shattered right before our eyes. It is the yobs themselves who will do the defining, in all their socially dystopian glory.

Perhaps owning a government-subsidized flatscreen TV and high-end training shoes should be a human right. That oughta hold 'em — for a while.
