A Dream Debased

Funny me, I always thought Martin Luther King's greatness rested on the idea that his vision was transcendent. We were not black and white Americans, we were Americans, period. Nothing epitomized this more than King's vision of a future in which people would "not be judged by the color of their skin, but the content of their character." Apparently Al Sharpton didn't get the message. "We're not giving them this day. This is our day, and we ain't giving it away," said Sharpton. To what was he referring? Glenn Beck's "Restore Honor" rally which took place on the same date and at the same Lincoln Memorial location as MLK's 1963 "I Have a Dream" speech.
It is completely unsurprising that a huckster like Al Sharpton feels the need to keep fanning the flames of racial division. And make no mistake: "our day" means that Martin Luther King is to be considered a "blacks only" icon who is not to be "co-opted" by the more than 250,000 "mostly white" people who showed up for radio host Glenn Beck's celebration of traditional American values. The day the majority of black Americans reject Sharpton's vision of a "hopelessly racist" country is the day Al has to go out and get a real job.
Unfortunately, Sharpton is far from alone. The American left has long stoked the flames of racial division for political gain. In their world, conservatism is a synonym for racism and/or bigotry. In their world, Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin--and apparently even Martin Luther King's niece, Alveda King--have "desecrated" King's legacy by holding a rally on "their" day. In their world, Dr. King is reduced from a transformative American statesman--to a mascot for leftist-inspired racial grievances.
Once again, the mainstream media is willing to go along with the charade. Only those completely bereft of journalistic integrity could, as many of them did, describe what occurred on August 28th as "dueling rallies." By most estimates, Glenn Beck drew well over 250,000 Americans to his gathering. Estimates for Al Sharpton's crowd? 250 people. Only in leftist media-land does a one-thousand-to-one ratio become "competitive."
And only in leftist media-land does someone like Al Sharpton become the "Official Voice of Black America."
Based on what? Can anyone remotely imagine any conservative American, black or white, with as tattered a track record as Al Sharpton's being granted the kind of media elevation he now enjoys? How does a man who perpetrated the Tawana Brawley hoax for which he was fined; who referred to Jews as "diamond merchants" during the Crown Heights riots; and who referred to those who wanted to run a business in Harlem as "white interlopers" become a spokesman for anyone?
The answer is simple. Al Sharpton is perfectly aligned to liberalism's need to maintain as much racial divisiveness in America as possible. If liberals can't continue to convince black Americans that conservatives are their enemies, they're in serious trouble. If "content of character" prevails over "color of skin," it becomes harder and harder to convince people they are "victims" of something beyond their control, for which expanding government is the only mitigating factor. If liberals' demonization of black dissent--which has been so successful that more black Americans cheered the acquittal of O.J. Simpson for murder than the appointment of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court--can be exposed for the totalitarian suppression it truly is, progressivism becomes unsustainable.
And liberals know it. It is why they celebrate a "flexible" definition of "family"--even when they know an over seventy percent-out-of-wedlock birth rate, and the legions of fatherless boys it produces, is the single most destructive element plaguing black communities. It is why they bemoan the condition of inner-city schools--even as they fight tooth and nail to maintain the unionist status quo that has kept those schools mired in substandard conditions for fifty years. It is why their definition of "compassion" is how many black Americans they can get on government programs--as opposed to off of them. It is why the leftist-dominated entertainment industry continues to promote black gangsterism, thuggery and misogyny--as entertainment It is why certain elements of American history--such as the fact that the Republican party was founded as the anti-slave party and that the Democrats founded the Ku Klux Klan--must be suppressed.
It is why the overwhelming majority of Americans black and white are unaware of the fact the Martin Luther King was a Republican.
Why? Perhaps it's because he envisioned a world where "all of G0d's children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics, will be able to join hands…"
That is a world completely anathema to liberals. Unless the flames of racial discord are continually stoked, the real issues which plague America, such as runaway spending and a teetering economy will have to be addressed. Democrats might even be forced to explain how fifty years of unblinking, black American loyalty has, according to those same Democrats, yielded virtually nothing in terms of racial progress.
I urge Americans of every ethnicity to read Dr. King's "I Have a Dream" speech which is easily accessible on the internet. After reading it, ask yourself a simple question: which political ideology, liberal or conservative, is more closely aligned with Dr. King?
