How we don't take care of our troops: It's a national disgrace
http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com |
When I did business in Washington,
D.C., when I served on Capitol Hill, do you
know what I found out? I found out that
politicians love to say one thing and do another.
Just ask America's vets.
When I served on the Armed Services Committee
for almost four terms, I saw firsthand how our troops, our
men and women in uniform lived on food stamps in many
instances. I learned also firsthand of how Congress and the
president would make one promise on health care, and then
do something completely different.
We call this "lying" in northwest Florida.
You know what else I learned? I learned that so many
American families who, had troops overseas, weren't even
given enough money to keep their families together, while
their husbands or their wives or sons or daughters were
serving overseas. It's a national disgrace.
Of course, Scarborough Country showed you two
weeks ago how young men and women killed in Iraq, just in
the past few months, were not given enough money for their
families to even bury them.
I had one mother email me last night, and she said,
"Joe, thank you so much for exposing this. But I really feel
like there's nothing we can do."
But there is something you can do. You can pick up the
phone. You can call your congressman or congresswoman
at (202) 225-3121 and tell them you're not putting up with
it anymore.
If they care for our men and women overseas, if they
want to liberate Iraq, if they want to free people across this
globe, then they need to take care of the men and women
who are fighting that battle every day.
You know what? They're not doing it.
And if they tell you they are, they're lying.
