Haven't done a "news nugget" column in a while. Here goes.

California is once again on the cutting edge of what they think is societal evolution, and what the rest of the country mostly thinks is plain nuts. They've decided to teach gay history as part of the high school curriculum. No doubt a lot of historical figures will be coming out of the closet as a result. That's the bad news. The good news is that only 20 percent of fourth graders, 17 percent of eighth graders and 12 percent of high school seniors demonstrated "proficiency" on a National Assessment of Educational Progress history exam. If California is equally successful in teaching history with a gay slant, most parents have nothing to worry about.

AARP is running a TV commercial with a guy saying senior citizens are "no pushovers," and that the way to fix America's debt problem is to target waste and leave massive entitlements alone. That makes AARP an official bagman for the Obama administration. Anyone who thinks all of America's fiscal problems can be solved simply by targeting waste, probably thinks you can breathe under water, because water contains oxygen. Come to think of it Americans probably have a better chance of growing gills than some Congressmen have a chance of growing cojones.

Jane Fonda, who was set to appear on the QVC home shopping channel to promote her new book, got axed instead. She blamed it on "well funded and organized political extremist groups." I guess that's what aging leftists call Vietnam Vets. Yet with her foot only half-way in her mouth, Fonda decided to finish the job with a little historical revisionism. "I have never done anything to hurt my country or the men and women who have fought and continue to fight for us," said Hanoi Jane. The title of her book is "Prime Time." In a better world, it would be "What I Learned in Prison Serving Time for Treason."

In NYC, a tie vote between the firefighter's union and city officials allowed retired firefighter John Giuffrida, 43, to continue collecting his $74,624 disability pension. How "disabled" is Mr. Giuffrida? Since his retirement he's become a mixed martial arts fighter, and he enjoys hiking and scuba diving--despite the fact he was diagnosed with lung disease and post traumatic stress disorder. But it gets better: he passed his latest medical review at St. Francis Hospital on Long Island, but his union buddies on the Fire Department Pension Fund Board stillvoted to let him keep his pension. And get this: under pension system rules, retirees become immune to further action against them once they reach the 20th anniversary of their hiring. That would be August 11th for "Joltin' John" Giuffrida. No doubt training for the Iron Man Competition will begin August 12th.

In a blow for sanity, charges have been dropped against Julie Bass, an Oak Park, Michigan woman who had the unmitigated gall to plant vegetables in her front yard. Apparently the fact that this latest installment of Government Goons Gone Wild made national news shamed city officials into changing their minds. Unfortunately, America will have to be content with one-out-of-two in that regard: a crack team of cops in Midway, Georgia shut down a lemonade stand run by three young girls trying to earn enough money for a trip to a water park. Seems they didn't have the $50 per day, or $180 per year permit necessary to maintain such a sophisticated operation. Midway Police Chief Kelly Morningstar says police also didn't know "how the lemonade was made, who made it or what was in it." I'm betting most Americans know what's in Chief Morningstar. Hint: it would help Ms. Bass's vegetable garden flourish.

Just when you think the Fast And Furious gunrunning scandal couldn't get any more atrocious, the LA Times is reporting that at least six Mexican drug cartel figures were paid FBI informants. You know who didn't know that? The folks at the Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol and Firearms who were intent on arresting them. You know why they didn't know? Because the FBI didn't tell them. How stupid did it get? Ten days ago, Fox News reported that one of the informants was a high-level drug dealer who had initially been deported by the DEA. Then the FBI recruited him as a counter-terrorism informant. He was ostensibly tasked with reporting on terrorists and/or dirty bombs moving across the country's border. ATF only became aware of the arrangement in April following a six-month, multi-million dollar investigation paid for by the public. That's when it was revealed--are you ready for this--that the FBI informant was picked up by a DEA wiretap, and that info was forwarded to the ATF. Does the expression "Battling Bureaucracies" seem apropos? How about firing Eric Holder, one of the most compromised Attorney Generals this country has ever endured?
•
Speaking of firing, when does Tim "Turbo Tax" Geithner get the guillotine? For those who missed the Treasury Secretary's most recent promotion of the Obama administration's Hope and Change agenda, here's what he had to say two Sundays ago on NBC's "Meet the Press." "This is a very tough economy," he told host David Gregory. "And I think for a lot of people…it's going to be-it's going to feel very hard, harder than anything they've experienced in their lifetime now, for some time to come." I don't know about the rest of you, but "some time to come" means the first Tuesday in November 2012 for me--if not sooner.

Finally, a grand idea courtesy of Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-AL). "We might as well stake it out publicly to see what the disagreements are," Sessions told The Hill on June 24th, referring to the ongoing debt ceiling talks. In other words, broadcast this Beltway Bash-fest on C-SPAN and let Americans themselves decide who the good guys and the bad guys are. For a president who promised Americans the "most open and transparent administration in history" it's a no-brainer. Then again, he promised America on eight separate occasions that the healthcare bill would receive the exact same treatment. Yet for Americans sick to death of the mainstream media spin machine, the one which spins decidedly in the favor of Democrats, it would be a blessed relief. We the people deserve to see what ruling class decides to do with our taxes--along with those of our children and grandchildren.
