Jewish World Review July 11, 2011 / 9 Tamuz, 5771 The ‘Write Stuff’ By Arnold Ahlert http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | For an educational establishment seemingly determined to dumb down the nation, it is the next logical step. Starting next fall, Indiana public schools will no longer be required to teach cursive writing. Instead, school districts will be encouraged to focus on computer keyboard skills. Hey, why not? We now have a nation chock full of kids who can't add or subtract, because they rely on a calculator to do it for them. Like basic math skills, writing is so yesterday. In the brave new world of the future, little peckerheads pecking away on a keyboard is the next big thing. But that's not the best part. The best part is that another little bit of individualism will be submerged into the collective. As any handwriting expert will tell you, the way a person shapes his or her writing is a window into their soul. No doubt computer emoticons with their smiley or grumpy faces will be a viable substitute, buttressed by the "brilliance" of texting short-hand. Even as I write this, it's all I can do to keep from LOL. If you don't know what LOL means, you're SOL. But no matter. In the Big Bright Future toward which we're headed, anything requiring a bit of extra effort to master will be considered a waste of valuable time. It doesn't matter that several studies demonstrate good handwriting helps children develop better small motor skills and better thinking ability. For educrats on the cutting edge — every one of whom undoubtedly know how to write script — such banal pursuits are a waste of time. Debbie Mattocks, a teacher at Keene Mill Elementary in Springfield, VA in 2006, expressed the prevailing wisdom. "I can't think of any other place you need cursive as an adult other than to sign your name," she said. "Cursive — that is so low on the priority list, we really could care less. We are much more concerned that these kids pass their [standardized tests], and that doesn't require a bit of cursive." Is proper English low on the priority list as well? It's free. Just click here. Speaking of low priorities, there's an added bonus that comes with this latest innovation. Teachers are discovering that kids who can't write script, can't read it either. That's no big deal. I can't think of anything important written in script that today's students might be interested in reading — like, for instance, the original copies of the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence. The ones with all those long squiggly names signed in cursive at the bottom. Think how easy it will be to change what either document says a couple of generations from now, when no one can read the originals anymore. That's progress for you. Speaking of progress, how long before whacking away at a computer keyboard becomes old hat? Voice-command programs will soon make that tiresome burden extraneous as well. And how long will it be before computers can interact with electrodes planted in one's skull? Perhaps teaching people to talk will also go the way of the dodo. Life will become so easy, a caveman could live it. Exactly like he used to live it. All I can say about this madness is what I've said before: heaven help us all if the power goes out for any extended length of time. Watching the computer-literate generation reduced to three-year-old functionality levels would only be amusing for so long. But more seriously, as I've also said before, there are serous consequences for abandoning core skills based on technological advances. If everyone learns to rely on a computer, one's entire worldview will be reduced to the plus one, minus one, or zero of "compu-think." Perhaps that's the real agenda here. Nothing abets the state more than everyone thinking alike. People who think alike are so much more "pliable." And call me paranoid, but I don't believe for a New York minute that the ruling class will ever allow their kids to abandon math and writing skills. Such "advances" are strictly for the masses. After all, someone has to be able to sign the nation's unconditional surrender document. Even if that signature is nothing more than an "X."
