‘The Real Deal’ on Worldcom/MCI

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | Over the past several months, we have been investigating MCI's cozy relationship with the federal government, and demanding that the President and Congress walk away from these corporate crooks.

After all, Worldcom/ MCI admitted to the largest corporate fraud ever, and then filed the largest bankruptcy in US history. Now there are new, shocking allegations that show MCI may have stolen another $1 billion, while putting America's national security at risk.

The feds are investigating charges that MCI stole as much as $1 billion from its competitors over the past 10 years. The scheme, called "Project Scorpion" by MCI insiders, helped the corporation avoid paying access fees to other companies by routing their calls through Canada. The Justice Department is taking notice because it puts our national security at risk.

Here's how: MCI allegedly routed phone calls by the federal government through Canada and other foreign countries to avoid fees. That means secret communications from the State Department, the Pentagon and other national security operations were sent through foreign countries before reaching their destination. Industry experts tell Scarborough Country and the New York Times that without U.S. security measures in place, enemies could have easily intercepted these national security phone calls.

This is personally troubling to me because one of the first items I received after being sworn in to congress was my MCI calling card. Like other members of Congress, the State Department and the Pentagon, I was told to conduct all of my government business using this card.

More disturbing are reports that this scheme may still be in effect. If so, MCI can no longer claim its past problems were swept away by firing a few bad apples. I never bought that argument, and the Feds shouldn't either.

The Government Services Agency is wrapping up an investigation to determine whether MCI should be banned from further federal contracts. It's not even a close call. It's obvious these corporate villains have powerful friends in Congress and the White House, but tough luck.

American taxpayers have already been stiffed out of $180 billion.
