Impeaching Bush

http://www.NewsAndOpinion.com | The Democrats smell blood. The gauntlet has been thrown down, and one presidential candidate is talking about the impeachment of Pres. George W. Bush.

Florida Senator Bob Graham suggested this weekend that impeachment could be considered for President Bush, suggesting that if Bill Clinton could be impeached for lying about sex with an intern, George Bush could be impeached for lying about our war with Iraq. Graham accused the President of knowingly deceiving the American people and lying his way to war. He has also attacked the President for lying about Iraq’s Weapons of Mass Destruction.

As a Floridian who served with Sen. Graham in Congress, I have long held him in the highest regard. He is a hard-working man who works overtime for his state.

But the moderate Bob Graham I knew in Congress has been absent on the campaign trail thus far. The Bob Graham I knew told the Senate in the weeks before the war: ‘There are good reasons for considering attacking Iraq. Saddam Hussein’s regime has chemical and biological weapons and is trying to get nuclear capacity.’ Graham voted against the resolution supporting the war, but even he admitted Iraq had WMDs.

But with the presidential campaign heating up, the Senator is blasting the President for not having found those weapons in three months, and now has poured gas on the fire by waving the bloody flag of impeachment. What a mistake!

I believe the American people will continue supporting the president who proudly carried this country through the trials of September 11th…the president who threw Osama bin Laden and the Taliban out of power in Afghanistan…and the president who helped liberate the tortured and beleaguered people of Iraq.

And I am thankful tonight that Saddam Hussein and Osama bin Laden no longer have terrorist states to support their murderous visions of an America in flames. Think about it. Do you really want Howard Dean in charge of national security?

As for Senator Graham, here’s hoping the Bob Graham I have known for years reappears soon. I think he could serve his party and his country well. But his reckless rhetoric about the commander-in-chief is helping neither right now.
