Jewish World Review June 7, 2011 / 5 Sivan, 5771 NAACP Betrays Black American Schoolchildren By Arnold Ahlert http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | As a conservative, it's a distressing thing to watch black Americans invariably pull the lever for Democratic candidates on election day. There is no other group of Americans, with the possible exception of Jewish liberals, who so consistently vote against their own best interests. Perhaps it is somewhat understandable given progressives' monumental success in convincing black Americans that conservatives undermine those interests. But even progressives are going to have a tough time explaining the betrayal of black America by…the NAACP. In New York, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People has revealed there is one color which transcends black and white. It is the color green. Green, as in greenbacks that the NAACP has collected from the United Federation of Teachers (UFT) and its statewide affiliate the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) to the tune of $120,000 since 2008. For that pittance, and forty thou a year is a pittance, the NAACP has seen fit to attach its name to lawsuit filed by the unions to block the opening or expanding of 19 charter schools in public school buildings. But it gets better. Brooklyn state Assemblyman Eric Adams, who voted last May to increase the number of state-wide charter schools from 200 to 460, and who had the backing of Democrats for Education Reform, a pro-charter group which dumped thousands of dollars into his re-election campaign, signed on as a co-plaintiff in the suit. And then there's Bill Lynch. He's a consultant to both the UFT and the NAACP instrumental in coordinating the anti-charter campaign. Again, as it is for the NAACP, green is Mr. Lynch's primary color — as in the $340,000 paid to him by the UFT since 2009. The lawsuit itself is a "two-fer." It is aimed at not only preventing 19 charters from sharing space in public school buildings, but preventing 22 truly terrible public schools from being closed and re-organized. Citadels of unionized "achievement" like the the Academy for Collaborative Education in Harlem, where 3 percent of its students were rated proficient in English and 9 percent in math. Furthermore, if the lawsuit succeeds, 7,000 students registering with the 19 charters will have nowhere to go next year. The position of the unions? Perhaps no one has expressed it better than Bob Chanin, the National Education Association's (NEA) former General Council, in his farewell speech to that organization in 2009: "So the bad news, or depending on your point of view, the good news, is that NEA and its affiliates will continue to be attacked by conservative and right-wing groups as long as we continue to be effective advocates for public education, for education employees, and for human and civil rights. And that brings me to my final and most important point. Which is why, at least in my opinion, NEA and its affiliates are such effective advocates. Despite what some among us would like to believe, it is not because of our creative ideas. It is not because of the merit of our positions. It is not because we care about children. And it is not because we have a vision of a great public school for every child. NEA and its affiliates are effective advocates because we have power. And we have power because there are more than 3.2 million people who are willing to pay us hundreds of millions of dollars in dues each year because they believe that we are the unions that can most effectively represent them, the unions that can protect their rights and advance their interests as education employees." Just power, courtesy of union dues. Dues which, as Mr. Chanin conveniently omitted from his oratory, are mandatory in the overwhelming majority of cases. How necessary are mandatory dues? In 2005, Indiana Governor Mitch Daniels eliminated collective bargaining for government unions, including the collection mandatory dues. At that time, 25,000 of the state's 35,000 workers were covered under the collective bargaining agreement, and 16,408 of that 25,000 paid dues. In 2011, Indiana has 28,700 state employees — and 1,490 pay union dues. That's a 90 percent reduction. And where do the overwhelming majority of union dues end up? I get tired of repeating myself, but the stats don't lie: in the last eleven years, unions in general have contributed overwhelmingly to Democrats. With respect to education, the NEA has given 81 percent of its contributions to Democrats, and 5 percent to Republicans. The American Federation of Teachers? 90 percent to Democrats — and zero to Republicans. The NAACP? A non-profit organization forbidden by law from making campaign contributions. But not forbidden, apparently, from being bought off by those who would once again stick black American children in the back of the educational bus. It is almost unbelievable to realize that the same NAACP which recruited the plaintiffs for the ground-breaking 1954 Supreme Court decision, Brown vs. the Board of Education, outlawing school segregation — in order to improve the quality of education for black children — is now backing unions who are determined to undermine those educational opportunities. Yet if truth be told, why shouldn't they? Does anyone seriously think the same black New Yorkers, some of whom re-elected tax cheat and censured Congressman Charlie Rangel with an 80 percent margin, are going to have even the slightest misgivings about voting Democrat in the next election? Maybe they ought to. It's been 67 years since the Supreme Court outlawed school segregation. In those 67 years, at every level of government, black Americans have been overwhelmingly staunch supporters of the Democrat party. What black Americans have gotten in return is an education system in which black children lag consistently behind their white counterparts, by an average of almost four years. Yet for 67 years, Democrats have promised black Americans that they're going to make things better for their communities, as long as they keep hitching their wagons to the Democrat party star. After two-thirds of a century, one might be inclined to think that more than a few black Americans might be inclined to ask the question, "what have you done for me lately," as in how come our children keep getting the short end of the educational stick after more than three generations of party loyalty? Yet in order to ask that question, one must know history and have learned to think for oneself. Knowledge of history and an ability to think independently require a decent education. Democrats around the nation are making sure that doesn't happen. In short, union campaign funds are more important than the education of black children, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to explain how a status quo that ought be considered criminal could survive every challenge that's been thrown at it. In New York, black American parents and their children have been sold out by their own Democrat politicians. And now the NAACP is adding insult to injury. Ironically, Rod Paige, United States Secretary of Education from 2001-2005, characterized the racial disparity in education as "the greatest civil rights issue of our time."
