Jewish World Review Feb. 28, 2011/ 24 Adar I, 5771 Ain't Noting Like the Real Thing By Arnold Ahlert http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | One of the big problems I've always had with the American left is the fact that it values style over substance. As long as something "felt good" or "looked right," regardless of its actual value or, in many cases, its disastrous unintended consequences, the left was on board. Perhaps someone should tell the president about this long-lived understanding. Perhaps, while Libyans are being slaughtered, oils price spikes are threatening our economy, public service unions are running wild, and Democrat state legislators are abandoning their posts, having not one, but two Motown parties at the White House in the same week is a bad idea. Being president is a tough job, one requiring an enormous amount of time and effort to do it effectively. As such, no reasonable American would quibble with the idea of presidential "down time," for the purpose of re-charging one's intellectual and emotional batteries. Nor do I have any particular animus with this president's method for relieving stress, which apparently consists most often of chasing a little white ball around a giant stretch of green grass. He wasn't the first golfing president, nor is he likely to be the last. Yet there is something unsettling about a president who can "get down" while the goes up--in flames. It seems as if almost nothing happening around the planet, no matter how calamitous or bloody, causes anyone in this administration to question the timing or appropriateness of hosting one party after another while all of it is occurring. Contrast this with an incident at a White House press briefing last Wednesday. When questioned by CBS correspondent Mark Knoller about when the president might address the issue of Libya, new Press Secretary Jay Carney explained why Mr. Obama had been virtually mute for the better part of nine days. This is just a scheduling issue," said Carney. "As I said, the president will meet with Secretary of State Clinton this afternoon, his regular meeting and they will obviously discuss Libya. We will have something to say out of that meeting and if possible, the president will speak this afternoon or tomorrow." One can only wonder what part of Mr. Obama's schedule took precedence over the world going to hell in a handbasket. It is worth remembering that last December 10th, Mr. Obama left in the middle of a meeting with former president Bill Clinton and the press, saying his wife expected him at a White House Christmas party. Would anyone in the media have the courage to ask this president whether something to do with, say, Smokey Robinson or Cheryl Crowe, was given priority over Muammar al-Qaddafi and international chaos? Not to worry, PBS is on the case. On Tuesday, they'll be broadcasting "The Motown Sound: In Performance at the White House." On Sunday, according to Press Secretary Carney, it will be Gladys Knight's turn to entertain the Obamas and a group of the nation's governors at the White House. A question overheard on the videotape, courtesy of the mainstream media's crack White House correspondents: will "The Pips" be coming as well? Some better questions: will a single governor decline the invitation? Will anyone in the mainstream media ever question the timing and/or appropriateness of this president's inclinations, or his insensitivity towards a nation which is becoming increasingly aware that we have a leadership vacuum in the highest office of the nation? Not that the president completely abdicated his position last week. In fact, one might contend that the president gave himself a job promotion--from president to king. With a world in turmoil, Mr. Obama declared that he considered the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) "un-Constitutional" and ordered Eric Holder's Department of Justice to stop defending the statute. DOMA was passed by overwhelming and bipartisan majorities in both Houses of Congress and signed into law by president Bill Clinton. Thus it is the law of the land, whether this president likes it or not. Unilaterally ordering Justice to stop defending the statute is a clear-cut violation of the president's sworn oath to protect and defend the laws of our nation. Perhaps the Four Tops song, " Can't Help Myself" was the source of his inspiration. Thoughtful Americans worried about the future of the nation? Perhaps, as we get closer to the 2012 election, they too will be inspired by a Motown hit with respect to leadership in the Oval Office. How does "Ain't Nothing like the Real Thing" sound?
