2016: R.I.P. GOP

Sometimes the truth is a painful thing to witness, and before I say what I'm going to say, understand that I have no particular dog in the fight for the Republican presidential nomination. What I do have is the deep-seated belief that four more years of Barack Obama might be all this country needs to make any recovery from our current economic and spiritual malaise impossible.
Yet as I look at the four Republican candidates who remain standing, two words keep running through my mind: "flawed" and "mediocre." There isn't one of them who would seriously alter the current trajectory of the nation, because the Republican Party itself is split in two. The split is between those who want the kind of genuine reform critically necessary to save the nation, and those content to be the whipping boys of progressivism and their media enablers. It's too late to do anything about it in 2012, other than pray that one of these flawed mediocrities can beat the most divisive and economically cancerous president in modern history. 2016? With a heavy heart I state the sad truth: the half of the Republican party that wants to save the nation must form a third political party.
Suicidal? Compared to what? For years, a substantial portion of the American electorate has been forced to endure the fatally obnoxious go-along-to-get-along RINO wing of the Republican party. It is a wing that has demonstrated two enduring qualities, namely a complete abandonment of conservative ideology for the "compassionate conservatism" b.s. that had them outspending tax-and-spend Democrats, and a blood-boiling consistency to fold under any pressure from Democrats and their mainstream media apparatchiks. It is the part of the party that flinches when the current, and record-holding spendthrift currently occupying the Oval Office, refers to "obstructionist" Republicans as a means of obscuring his own dismal record during the 2012 election campaign.
Here's a question for the flinchers: what the hell do you think the 2010 landslide was all about if not precisely to obstruct to most fiscally destructive agenda this nation has ever witnessed? And where did the newly-elected Republican House majority -- the part of the government that controls spending -- draw its line in the sand?
Nowhere.

A series of continuing resolutions allowing Harry Reid and Senate Democrats the luxury of not having to pass a budget in over a thousand days? "Savings" triggers which are nothing more than slowing down the trajectory of additional debt accumulation in exchange for another rise in the debt ceiling, now headed for a Greece-like $16 trillion? A "grand sequestration bargain" in which Republicans surrender hundreds of billions of cuts in military spending, in exchange for cuts to Medicare service providers, even as budget-busting entitlement programs remain intact?
For what? To prevent a government shutdown you'd get blamed for? Because you can't stand a leftist media or a Marxist president calling you "do nothing?" Because you haven't got the stomach for a fight when a fight is critically necessary to save the nation?
A lot of Americans are getting damned tired of seeing one and-a-half of two political parties determined to ignore, not only their interests, but the seemingly unalterable reality of national bankruptcy. They're tired of the complacency and/or acquiescence to a president who has made it crystal clear that all of Congress is nothing more than a speed bump over which he and his unelected Cabinet heads and Czars will roll with impunity wherever and whenever it suits them. Democrats will put up with it, because their party has been hijacked by radical leftists for whom the ends always justify the means, no matter how humiliating, or unconstitutional.
What the hell is the Republicans excuse?
And let's not ignore the RINO contribution to the current run for the party's presidential nomination. I'm no fan of Newt Gingrich, but the reason he resonates is because he brings a passion to the debates that RINOs abhor. So what do the RINOs do? Trash the hell out of him, because they're absolutely positive that Milquetoast Mitt is the only candidate who can beat Barack Obama. This from the same bunch who was equally positive that Bob Dole and John McCain would prevail.
Maybe Mitt is the best candidate. But would it kill RINOs to focus what little passion they can muster up going after, say, Barack Obama? Before the 2010 election I spoke to someone at the RNC. I suggested it might be a good idea to run an ad with prominent Republicans apologizing for betraying their own ideology during the Bush years. Since then they've made it clear they betrayed nothing: tax-and-spend under the banner of compassionate conservatism Is their ideology.
It won't stand, and make no mistake: those people who characterize themselves as Tea Partiers are under no obligation to stand with Republicans on a permanent basis. They are Americans who've had it with one-and-half parts of Congress selling out their birthright, along with that of their children and grandchildren. Republicans should thank Heaven that most of them will yet again vote for the lesser of two evils--to save the nation, not some sorry bunch of Old Guard wimps delusional enough to think it will go on forever.
I'm writing this now because even four-plus years is a short time to get together a genuine opposition party. But I'd bet my life more than a few Americans are ready to try. And not just Tea Partiers either. They're far from the only group of Americans who've had it up to their eyeballs with the head-in-the-sand, business-as-usual approach to governance. Millions of Americans are sick to death of those who would micro-manage every aspect of American life, even as they studiously ignore the most visible and pressing issue of our time: runaway government in every incarnation that the word "runaway" represents.
Only the moochers and the economically illiterate (and there's a lot of overlap in those two groups) can look at the tragedy occurring in Europe--a tragedy occurring even though they long ago abandoned any pretense of serious national security spending--and conclude that the EU's socialist/Marxist model is worth emulating. And make no mistake about the word Marxist: when the European Commission bureaucrats are saying the only way to keep the EU intact is to do away with the "messy" idea of individual nations controlling their own budgets, that's centralized command-and-control, people-be-damned Marxism, every bit as cancerous as it was when the Soviet Union practiced it.
You want that here? That's exactly where we're headed with an administration that ignores the Constitution, tramples states' rights, picks crony-capitalist winners and losers, and tells Americans we're only a few dozen taxpayer-underwritten green companies and infrastructure revitalization projects away from utopian nirvana--all while the so-called opposition party tut-tuts its way towards eventual submission. Even as trillions upon trillions of additional dollars in borrowed money is poured down the federal rat hole.
Between now and 2016, let's give the rats some serious competition.
