Jewish World Review Jan. 20, 2011 / 15 Shevat, 5771 An ‘Intimate’ Prime-time Interview By Arnold Ahlert http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | Before proceeding with this column, a disclaimer: one of the things I find annoying is a traffic jam caused by people slowing down to look at an accident on the opposite side of the road. I say opposite side of the road to make it clear that nothing impedes the traffic flow on my side except for one thing, and one thing only: morbid curiosity. I fully aware that morbid curiosity is a compelling emotion for many people, hence the disclaimer. Within that context, my thoughts about Diane Sawyer's "exclusive!" interview with Gabrielle Gifford's husband, astronaut Mark Kelly. Perhaps we have reached a point in America where nothing is beyond the scope of the public's so-called right know, but I consider 20/20's "special" broadcast, the one entitled "The Congresswoman and the Astronaut: An American Story of Love and Strength" the equivalent of a car accident, with one exception: car accidents are must that, accidents. Random events. This interview was planned--and heavily promoted to boot. Perhaps the most laughable aspect of that promotion was the idea that this was an "intimate" interview--as if there's anything remotely intimate about talking on network TV during prime-time. Understand, I direct no particular animus towards Mr. Kelly. Until this incident occurred, I, like most Americans, had never even heard of the man. No doubt he is every bit the stalwart individual that being the leader of a NASA space shuttle mission would require. And perhaps it is naive on my part, but I'd like to think his desire to be interviewed is nothing more than evidence that he is still not thinking clearly after enduring those most unsettling event of his entire life. Yet if I'm being honest, when I heard that he had consented to talk with Ms. Sawyer in front of a camera with a large portion of the nation watching, the first words out of my mouth--to no one, as I was standing alone in my bedroom at the time--was, "you blew it, buddy, big time." I guess what I'm trying to say is this: if it was my wife lying in a hospital bed with a hole in her brain, and Diane Sawyer or any other media type came looking for an "exclusive interview," you can bet the farm that not single word coming out of my mouth in response would have been suitable for prime-time TV. And that's assuming Ms. Sawyer or one of her staffers had called me on the phone. If anyone had actually come to see me in person, I might just be looking at assault charges. What does that make me by today's "standards?" A dinosaur. Someone who thinks privacy is still one of the most valuable commodities in a world which now views such privacy as a quaint anachronism. Some who believes that no matter what kind of cosmic joke might inadvertently thrust me into the limelight, that I would hopefully remember that my life, and the lives of those close to me, do not belong to a media or a public looking for the next traffic accident. In the last two weeks, America has been subjected to jackals masquerading as journalists, with an idiot sheriff tossed into the mix for comic relief. From the very beginning, these people quickly revealed that getting the story right--as in Ms. Giffords had been wounded, not killed---didn't matter an iota. And that was the high point of this sordid episode. The slide into the deeper recesses of the media sewer continues without regard to facts or decency, with the so-called "paper of record," aka the New York Times, leading the charge. We have always had sloppy journalism, and we've always had "expert" opinion. Yet a media which now demands enough info to fill a 24/7/365 schedule is its own worst enemy. The supply of traffic accidents is limited, leaving far too much time and space to fill. Thus, much like the old days in movie theaters where they showed "B movies" whenever the feature film ran short, we now have "B pundits" and "B journalists" hacking away to make up for the lack of quality news stories. And that's being kind: when self-proclaimed "D-list" celebrity, Kathy Griffin, gets space on major news sights to whale away at Sarah Palin's 16-year-old daughter--apropos of nothing other than her contempt for the girl's mother--you can be there's more than a few "D-list" media types enabling her. I wish Mark Kelly nothing but the best of luck regarding his wife's recovery. I just wish he'd told Diane Sawyer to take a hike when she came trolling for her "exclusive interview." Of course, we would have never heard such a rebuke. Such Very Important People rarely get revealed for the classless hucksters they far too often behave like. I'm betting it doesn't even occur to Ms. Sawyer that her "intimate" interview might have offended some of us out here. Probably because we're outnumbered by the rubber-neckers, who would slow down look at anything. Anything but their own behavior.
