By Arnold Ahlert http://www.JewishWorldReview.com | For most of the time I was living in New York City, parking meters were simple machines. You put a quarter in, got x amount of time, and if you left the space before using it all up, the next person who parked there got to use the extra minutes. Then the city changed the meters. The new ones had a sensor: when the original car pulled out of the space, the time on the meter went back to zero. The idea behind the change was that beating New Yorkers out of "free" time would raise revenues. My initial thought: how screwed up is a government that employs people who have nothing better to do than figure out ways to--literally--nickel and dime taxpayers at every turn? I bring this up because, last Friday, the State Department announced that they will be removing the words "mother" and "father' from passport applications and replacing them with "gender neutral terminology." "The words in the old form were 'mother' and 'father,'" explained deputy assistant Secretary of State for Passport Services, Brenda Sprague. "They are now 'parent one' and 'parent two.'" The State Department's website was more forthcoming: "These improvements are being made to provide a gender neutral description of a child's parents and in recognition of different types of families." Who are these people? Who sits around in offices supported by taxpayers and ruminates about the terminology on passport applications--and collects a paycheck for doing so? Everyone with a functioning brain knows what this is really all about: placating progressive activists for whom the family is anything they say it is. And sure enough, a shill for that particular lobby was more than willing to applaud the decision as a "victory" for gay rights: "Changing the term mother and father to the more global term of parent allows many different types of families to be able to go and apply for a passport for their child without feeling like the government doesn't recognize their family," said Jennifer Chrisler, executive director of the Family Equality Council. That would be the Family Equality Council whose website says it "works at all levels of government to advance full social and legal equality on behalf of the approximately one million lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender families raising two million children. Parenting protections, adoption, repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act, health insurance reform, immigration reform, safe schools, and workplace equality are many of the issues Family Equality Council is currently working on at the state and federal level." Let's do the math: one million families raising two million children. Let's assume "family" is at least two parents, a stretch by modern-day standards, but let's give them the benefit of the doubt. That's four million people in country of over three hundred million, a number which represents 1.3% of the population--which is apparently a high enough percentage of people to engender the elimination of passport application terms commonly accepted by the other 98.7% of the American public. That would be the same American public which, in the thirty one states that held referendums on gay marriage, rejected the proposal thirty-one times. What is the real issue here? The yawning chasm that separates Americans' tolerance of something versus their approval of it. Politically militant gays and their enablers refuse to accept a world in which Americans abide who they are. Americans must applaud who they are. How likely is that? About as likely as gays not merely tolerating a conservative Christian lifestyle, but reciprocating the very same approval they demand. Ironically, such myopia on the part of the gay community is completely antithetical to their interests. For example, many of the very same Americans who would gladly accept "civil unions" between gays recoil in disgust when the militant wing of the gay community insists that the word "marriage"--a word whose definition has been commonly understood by every culture and country in the world for thousands of years--must be changed to accommodate a miniscule minority of people. This nonsense with respect to passports will do precisely the same thing: alienate many of the same people who might otherwise be sympathetic to many causes within the gay community. The Fox News story on this issue has (at this writing) generated over 4800 comments. To say the overwhelming majority of them were less than enthusiastic about the idea of changing mother and father to parent one and parent two would be an understatement. Is this the battleground where the gay community wants to make a major stand? What goes around comes around. There are many sub-groups in America which comprise less than two percent of the population. How many of them would the gay community like to see accommodated by the government? Those gays who consider it perfectly acceptable to impose their agenda on a recalcitrant public by government fiat might want to think about long-term goals versus short-term goals. It's not about winning the battle for the hearts and minds of the American majority, it's about winning the war. The bet here is you made more enemies than converts. For what? Terms on passport applications? At a time when most Americans are already disgusted by both the over-reach of government and the number of government employees who get paid to do dream up schemes like this? Enjoy your "victory."
