One, is that is has no binding power on anything and then two, the issue of the Constitution is not that people don't read the text and think they're following it. The issue of the Constitution is that the text is confusing because it was written more than a hundred years ago, and what people believe it says differs from person to person, and differs depending on what they want to get done, so I wouldn't expect too much coming out of this"--Washington Post staff writer, Ezra Klein You can say two things about Ezra Klein. One, the depth of his ignorance is breathtaking. Two, the fact that he has a job as a staff writer for a major metropolitan newspaper is frightening. Yet this is precisely where we are in today's America. And while he may have done so inadvertently, Mr. Klein has illuminated the stakes moving forward: will America remain a nation faithful to its founding principles, or one in which those principles have no binding power because, as he puts, it such principles are too "confusing?" Mr. Klein made his statement during an interview on MSNBC in reference to the idea that House Republicans intend to begin the 112th Congress by reading the Constitution aloud, something Mr. Klein considers a political "gimmick." Compared to what, one wonders. Passing a 2700-page health care bill that no one read beforehand? How about the text of that bill, or a number of others routinely passed by Congress, Mr Klein? One might make a case that the legal jargon routinely used to write Congressional bills is confusing to the average American. Oh wait, someone did: "I love these members, they get up and say, 'Read the bill.' What good is reading the bill if it's a thousand pages and you don't have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?"--Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.). I'll be the first to admit that it might be a stretch to call John Conyers average, but if this isn't a damning indictment of the way the 111th Congress conducted business, what is? Perhaps former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi provided the topper when she indicated that the reservations expressed by Mr. Conyers were no impediment to passing legislation at all: "We have to pass the (health care) bill so you can find out what's in it." Thus, Mr. Conyers and the rest of his Democrat colleagues were relieved of the overly onerous burden of knowing what was in the bill before they approved a complete re-ordering of America's healthcare system. As for the "binding power of the Constitution," which, despite Mr. Klein's contention that there is no such thing, still applies to Congressional law-making, we have Madame Pelosi's contemptuous dismissal of such concerns: "Are you serious?" she replied to a reporter who had the temerity to ask whether the health care bill passed Constitutional muster. Here's hoping the House of Representatives is as serious as a heart attack. For the past two years, Americans have seen their Constitution assaulted by a progressive movement which, as Ezra Klein points out, considers the document little more than an outdated tract of arcane verbiage designed to thwart its "enlightened" ambitions. No doubt many of those same people are delighted by a recent survey conducted online by Harris Interactive from December 1-3, 2010, which revealed that 42% of Americans think the phrase "from each according to his abilities, to each according to his needs," is contained in the Bill of Rights. Perhaps Mr. Klein is right after all. Confusing Karl Marx and James Madison reveals a monumental level of ignorance, one doubtlessly exacerbated by a public school system which continues to nurture the kind of under-achievement guaranteed to produce the socialists-in-training that are the lifeblood of big-government Democrats. If they even bother to tune in to the Republican "gimmick" of reading the Constitution aloud, one wonders how many younger Americans would be getting their very first experience with the founding principles of our nation? For many years I resisted the notion that the unholy alliance between the Democrat party and the education establishment was conspiratorial. Yet year in and year out, the same dismal level of mediocrity reveals itself in a world where a once-dominant American educational experience is now revealed for the international embarrassment it has become. Is it really nothing more than ineptitude piled on ineptitude that produces the Ezra Kleins of the world, people whose level of ignorance is only matched by the self-assurance which accompanies it? This year promises to produce some epic political battles. It is no secret that president Obama, using such entities as the Environmental Protection Agency as a club, intends to bypass the Legislative Branch of government whenever it resists his socialist/marxist agenda, and impose rule by Executive fiat. As Americans have learned in the last two years, an administration which has nationalized banks, car companies, etc., tossed bankruptcy law aside, prevented a state from protecting itself against illegal immigrants, and forced Americans to endure pat-downs and scans at airports, must be taken seriously. That Republicans intend to blunt such thuggery is likely. Which bring us to Congressional Democrats, to whom a simple question must be posed: will you allow the president to encroach on the legislative branch's turf because you agree with his ideology, or will you protect the Constitutional separation of powers? Or, more bluntly, a simpler question: Are you Americans, first and Democrats, second--or vice versa? By all means read the Constitution aloud, Republicans. There is no doubt many members of our government need a "refresher course" on the greatest legal document ever written. Perhaps they'll even remember that they swore an oath to defend and protect it against all enemies, foreign and domestic--as well thoroughly "confused" people like Ezra Klein.
