It might help to know how calories work. We associate them with food, but a calorie is just a measurement of energy (the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water 1 degree Celsius) that can apply to anything. A gallon of gasoline, for example, has 31,000 calories, using the same way they're measured for food. The energy from one piece of cherry cheesecake could power a 60-watt light bulb for 90 minutes. How Stuff Works explains how this all relates to your weight and includes links to basic charts showing the caloric content of different foods and the calories burned by various physical activities.

Calorie-Count is much slicker than the independent site I wrote about last year now that it's part of the About.com family. The handy site is built around a huge database listing the calories and nutritional info for all kinds of foods, even unusual dishes such as bison and menu items at popular restaurants. Among the many tools are logs to help you track your dieting and a toolbar for your Web browser that makes it easy to look up calorie info without going to the site. Calorie-Count also has a thriving community that allows users to share their dieting experiences and ask questions.

Nutrition Data specializes in providing complete nutrient listings for all types of food for people trying to watch their weight or those with special dietary needs. Its most useful feature is the ability to enter a recipe's ingredients and get nutritional info for the dish, including calories.

Calories Per Hour is a kind of streamlined version of Calorie-Count. It offers many dieting tools, such as calculators for weight loss and calories burned by various activities. Some users might prefer the site's simpler text-based design.

I Ate a Pie provides dozens of reviews for all the packaged diet foods sold in grocery stores. Considering the scads of products just in the frozen-foods aisles, this is a highly useful service for those who are counting calories. Items earning five-star raves include Special K Bars, Trader Joe's Salmon Burgers and Pepperidge Farm Pumpernickel Snack Sticks. Based on their one-star ratings, you might want to avoid Fifty50 No Sugar Added Strawberry Spread ("tasteless mess") or Dannon Carb Control Yogurt ("awful") — although you have to wonder about a reviewer who gives one star to V8 Vegetable Juice after noting that she hates tomato juice.

The comprehensive diet section at iVillage not only includes many of the tools of the other websites but also articles and features typical of an online magazine. For instance, you can take a quiz to find out which weight-loss plan best suits your personality and get tips on how to eat more healthfully when dining out.

You might be tempted to try a weight-loss plan such as the Atkins Diet or the South Beach Diet. Diet Information has good subjective overviews of them all, although navigating among the many ads can be cumbersome.
